Jackpot- uno dos tres

Named one of dance music’s best kept secrets, in 1983 Italian experimental sound artist Marco Donatello (suffered an early death due to excessive amounts of partying)  and Swedish synth pioneer Gleen Asp made recordings together. Their ambition was to do sound to an art project, but the result was a cocktail of italo-esque melodies, ebm rhythms, and filmic arpeggios. Story has it, the music was produced as an excuse to press records off a narcotic solution in order to smuggle drugs and that a mishap during the operation explains why we haven’t heard any of these tracks untill now. This is a  document of unknown, yet truly unique Swedish dance music. First track features the simpe lines “Uno, Dos, Tres, Quatro/Ein, Zwei, Drei, Fier” spread out across the track, not unlike many good old detroit and chicago acts such as Idol Makings “Un, Deux, Trois” from the early 90ies, however with a pumped up rhythm section not too far from the legendary A Number of Names “Shari Vari” from 81.

Disco Bloodbath getting cosmic!

The East End boys and West End girls

East end London boys are dusting off the pastic for this weeks resident advisor podcast.

“The Disco Bloodbath boys have risen rapidly since starting their club night back in April of 2007. Beginning in an old Caribbean restaurant in the heart of Dalston, their effervescent mix of disco, italo and early house quickly attracted a following of clubbers that fancied a change from the usual London club night. As their popularity swelled, Bloodbath were forced to change venues multiple times due to the sheer demand for a place on their dance floor, and with The Sunday Times recently name checking them in an article about the capital’s disco renaissance, it looks like their success is set to continue.”

There is some serious crate digging in this one…download before it expires…

Ilija Rudman – Dance Disorder (Faze Action Remix)

From Phonica

“After a series of releases on labels Rong, Infant and Deep Freeze, Bearfunk were quick to grab “Disco Disorder” and wasted no time in asking their studio neighbours Faze Action to step up. Their synth-bass, low slung and sleazy remix, with a dose of their trademark strings hits the spot. This sits snuggly with Ilijas original which mixes in real bass and guitar with his analog heavy funk-laden grooves.”

greg kihn band- jeopardy

Bringin back some 80’s classic tunage…this tune is all about big hAIR and AIR guitar- “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan style. I cant stop singing it to myself…I sound like apreecher-man as I  echo “jeopardy…jeopardy..jepard…jepard….jeopardy” …. Thanks once again to BIS in New York for educating me in this tune.

Depeche Mode- Enjoy the slience (Ewan Pearson mix)

Whats with all these remixes in the last few years? is any tune safe from the remix hammer? Obviously some remixes are brilliant, others are not- I eventully blocked out the memory from a remix of “joy division – love will tear us apart”, so I wont speak of it again.

If I had one tune that I could save from the remix I Would have said “Enjoy the Silence” … the vocals and synths are so epic that it would sound out of place on any other. Lucky enough Ewan pearson is on hand, he seems to use his midas touch and managing to somehow turn this Anthem into an acid house banger!!

Brian Bennett / Frank McDonald & Chris Rae

sun_earth_moon-copy

Cloning originally appeared on Bennett’s Voyage LP as ‘Pendulum Force’ in 1978. Its been recently re-released on Permanent Vacation in a compilation called, Space Oddities A Compilation of Rare European Library Grooves from 1975-1984, by Alex Le-Tan & Jes. There’s an epic spaced guitar action that stands this out from the crowd and its a generally an all round good sound, especially with your eyes closed, look out.
Also, Brian Bennetts 1978 LP Voyage(A Journey Into Discoid Funk) will be up here soon.

Brian Bennett – Cloning.Slice it up here.

..

This is another track on the Space Oddities compilation. Again an oldie, its heavier than ‘Cloning’ but is still a synthy spaced out disco roller. As analogue as one could hope for and as real as it gets. We love it.

Guy Gerber- Timing

I always thought Guy Gerber had potential, but a lot of his releases have been mediocre to say the least, despite releasing on cocoon regularly (although generally recent cocoon is pish)
However his new 12″ ‘Timing’ is pretty cool, with its old analog style synth line and hypnotic yet simple percussion its certainly one that could fit into many a set in the later hours of the morning.

Marco Carola – Bloody Cash

20 days into the New Year and it feels like this track is making a resurgence in the clubs. One of those tunes you love or hate, that sounds particularly good on a big rig but not so impressive on those ipod headphones. It helps being in nearly everyone from Richie Hawtin to Slam’s track-listings over the last couple of months…it also appeared on the Sebastien San resident advisor mix.The track itself has a rolling drive and shades of Minilogue/ Cobblestone Jazz esq. synths and blips. Defiantly worth at least a listen!
