Claro Intelecto – Peace of mind EP

Here’s my favourite few tracks from this blistering EP (2003) from the legend that is Mark Stewart.

‘Tone’s got a really old school electro feel and turns into an absolute acid monster, very punchy and great for the dancefloor. ‘Signifier’ is a much more deep and mellow little bouncer thats lovely when you get into its groove and ‘Contact’, which also featured on the Neurofibro LP, is a real bass lead techno track with unbelievable swinging hi’s. Get involved. x

Matias Aguayo – Walter Neff

A great track off Kompact last year, featured in many a beats in space mix. As RA puts it…Born with a cowbell for a spine, “Walter Neff” has Aguayo spitting a variety of beatbox effects, with “doo doo DOO doo,” “Oww Oww Oww” and a series of whooping used for melodies. The track is the complete opposite of Dave Aju’s recent mouth experiments on Open Wide—Aguayo doesn’t bother mimicking the sounds of instruments and the results are delirious, effective.

Mickey Moonlight – Interplanetary Music

Its rare to come across a likeable Ed Banger track. However, somehow they managed to snag this lovely little number by UK artist Mickey Moonlight. This tune was originally put out by the 70’s cosmic disco cadet Sun Ra. If you want to know how weird this cat is, check out this video. I think Mickey has done him proud:

Lil' Louis- French Kiss

Lil Louis is the stage name used by Chicago-born house music producer and DJ Louis Burns. He scored a number of hits on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in the eighties and nineties, three of which hit #1.

“French Kiss,” featured vocals by Shawn Christopher and spent two weeks at #1 on the dance chart in 1989.

Alex Smoke – Don't See the Point

Alex Smoke is a Scottish talent making electronic records that blur together European minimalism, pop structures and emotional strings and pads. He has released two full length albums, ‘Incommunicado’ and ‘Paradolia’ [Soma Records] and a slew of singles and remixes, many of which have arrived on Soma and German label Vakant.

His debut release ‘Random As’ came out in January 2002, but Smoke has always been immersed in music. In his youth he sang in a choir for four years (a far cry no doubt from the mournful tones on his ‘Don’t See the Point’ or ‘Never Want to See You Again’), his parents are involved in classical music, and he has classical training in cello and piano.

Alex makes minimal uncompareable to the stigma this genre has attracted over the last years. So step back a couple of years and to one of my favourite tunes by him, I would highly recomend checkin out his other stuff.

MR. FIAGIO- TAKE A CHANCE

Just checked out Fact Magazine- 20 best: Italo records ever made, from Serge Santiago…pretty standard really with “take a Chance” at the No#1 slot.  In his words;

“If you want somewhere to start with Italo-Disco then start here – for me, ‘Take a Chance’ is the best Italo record of them all. It hits all the right buttons, taking you on a bizarre journey and doing so within song format, it works every time, anywhere to anyone. Pure magic!”

Our number 1 would probably be Fockewulf 190 – Body heat (yousendit), which incidently didnt make the top top 20!

Prosumer

Berghain by antenne on flickr

Achim Brandenburg is a bit of a Chicago house and Detroit techno buff, an area of expertise he first picked up as a record buyer for Hard Wax in his hometown of Saarbruecken. That was during the heyday of soulful house labels such as Prescription, and it’s a sound which still can be heard in Prosumer’s sets today. “My heart is beating for the early Chicago/Detroit sound and for music that feels similar and transports this feeling into today,” explains Achim. Slowly the consumer turned into Prosumer, issuing his first record on 240 Volt in 2004.

A year later came ‘The Craze’ on Playhouse, then vocal duties on Sebo K’s ‘Moved’, both of which became bona fide hits, melding house stabs with soulful vocals. Achim’s latest record is a collaboration with producer Murat Tepeli, with whom he also performs live, for Ostgun Ton, the record arm of Berlin’s Berghain/Panoramabar complex, where Achim is now a resident DJ.

“Whatever I do has got to be real,” says Achim about his DJing. “If a record doesn’t move me emotionally or physically, I won’t play it out. I have to feel the music and I’m always trying to share my feelings with the crowd on the floor. If everything goes down well, there’s an exchange going on. I try to keep a balance between pushing people’s buttons and surprising them. I’m sharing my inner emotions. And dance music has got to be horny.”

Data- Blow

DATA Is a british synthpopband that released three original albums; “Opera Electronica” in 1981, “2-Time” in 1983 and “Elegant Machinery” in 1985. A compilation called “Accumulator” was released in 1995 by Eternity Records containing the complete albums “2-Time” and “Elegant Machinery,” and the track “Fallout” from their first album “Opera Electronica.” Data was inspired by machinist and bauhaus movements and of their contemporary cabaret music of the 20s and 30s. Lyrically they were satirical for their first two albums, turning somewhat more romantic/light entertainment/dance to their last.

Frontman Georg Kajanus (originally Hultgren, of norwegian ancestry) previously played in angloscandinavian electro-rock band Eclecticon and as keyboardist/composer in the 70s rockband Sailor. In the late 90s Georg returned to Sailor for several live performances. Other members of Data were the sisters Frankie & Phil Boulter, of who only Frankie remained in the band for the last album Elegant Machinery.

This tune was included in Metro Area’s fabric cd and also on DJ Harvey’s recent Beats in Sapce mix!
