Deetron- Isotope

red_skies

Another old school cocoon banger here from Deetron, pioneered by the likes of Sven Vath and Switch in 2005 making this a club classic. Recently it has made a resurgance in the disco field, only the temp is slowed from the original 130bpm to somewhere around 118. ‘Isotope’ is so melodic it hurts, with an arpeggiated synth just building and building- then an offset bass-line kicks in and everything goes off! Tonnes of 909 action and no need for more cowbell.

Azari & III – Reckless (With Your Love)

l_764a1bc141c443dbbab21b4670891732

After  only stumbling into Azari & III today, this tune really caught my attention whilst listening to the the latest Beats in Space. The Roland drum machine sound gives a real old school Detroit style vibe, helped with “inner City” and “stings of life” style chords resonating in the background throughout. Stacks of Jack- then you get the vocals, they are outstanding!

The Comsat Angels – I’m Falling

769b89d88b4521d4892912673232bb10a95901f1_m

The Comsat Angels were a post-punk band from Sheffield, England, active from 1978 to 1995. Their music has been described as “abstract pop songs with spare instrumentation, many of which were bleak and filled with some form of heartache.”

A great tune played by Tensnake in his recent BIS mix, “I’m Falling” was also featured in the movie Real Genius with Val Kilmer. Awesome jerky 80s pop, it even has some panpipes!

Biceps Detroit Day

Claire Tully- Invasion

Here’s a few tasty old detroit techno tracks. We thought it nice to give a little taster of bicep’s rougher, tougher edge. This is the type of shit I listen to running home from the gym.  All these tracks rock in their own right and some are very special indeed and with age aside (they range from 1995 to 2004), all have got that detroit goodness, from deep house to straight up dirty techno.

Diskjokke- Cearadactylus

2m8BXUfri5sry1ip47eX80Ai_500

This is one of my favorite releases this year, tis a proper chugger!

As the full pupp crew put it…”Welcome back Diskjokke to the motherpupp after a successful run of releases on Smalltown Supersound and Kindisch. 2008 was a hectic year for Joachim, putting together his live band, doing remixes for Metronomy, Foals and Lykke Li to name a few and spreading melodic, trance-inducing feel good disko gospel around the world. “Asa Nisi Masa” has been causing much mayhem the last 12 months, even causing girls to offer me services I won’t mention here. Wibbly wobbly arpeggios massaging your buttocks. Very, very rude indeed as already showcased on the Full Pupp/Greatest Tits Compilation, “Cearadactylus” is definitely a different kind of beast. Slow and chugging along at a tempo even fit for dinosaurs.”

Shit Robot- Simple Things (Work It Out) (Serge Santiago Version)

c7c169ce

So much hype already over this summer big DFA hit, but not much sound resonating over this remix. Im a big fan of the original and actually prefer it to the Todd Terje remix ‘Shocker’. Equally I love Serge’s interpretation as always he combines classic house sounds and modern disco, keeping a really upbeat piano groove going old school style. This tune however is broken down and takes a couple of different directions, awesome perc and spacey synths take full use of the 10 minutes!

Bo Bellow- Knockin

Some party italo to brighten up the weekend, this tune sounds so familiar I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a them tune to some 80s cop drama. This 12″ always crops up in the big names boxes, definitely worth having a copy!

John Cooper Clarke- (I Married) A Monster From Outer Space

monster

Amongst all of the great bands and songwriters that came out of Salford in the early 70s and 80s, John Cooper Clarke has perhaps never received the recognition he deserves. Although to be fair, Clarke doesn’t really do pop songs. His brand of dark spoken verse set against harsh and straining instrumentals is a somewhat acquired taste. However, his lyrics are often filled with humour and have a unique ‘WTF’ factor.

Jimmy Edgar – Semierotic

booooooom_gatepin_01

The prodigal child from Detroit kicked off his DJ career at the age of 15, DJing with his fellow Detroit legends. This track from his 2006 album released on Warp, identified as one of the highlights, is best described as a “Pac Man-esque melody set against classic haunting strings plucked straight from Motor City.” Jerky Goodness!

Mayday – Sinister

cY9i56e40mz6iaruUMCC4ohCo1_500

I’ve confessed my love for Derrik May many times before, but once again I dust off a classic like this 1988 12″. This is a live cut of the tune, there are a tonne of remixes floating  about which are all pretty sweet. It was on the B side of the ‘nude photo’ track i posted a while ago. So amazing thanks to Darshan Jesrani form Metro Area for reminding me how good this tune is!

Ladyhawke – Back of the Van (Mock and Toof Mix)

pYleFrsZDp69ag4arrEKFbJeo1_400

This 12″ came out on Modular last year and seems to be sold out, think it was a limited edition press. after purchasing a while back I didn’t realise it was Ladyhawke until recently, now that this tune is getting rinsed in the mainstream- either way this remix is a cool take on things. As Phonica puts it “Mock & Toof’s punk funk workout really hits the spot!”

Burial- South London Boroughs

Hate the word “dubstep”, it makes me think of cheesy electro house wobbly bottom beats. For me I like the top ends, the shuffling aspect of tunes in this dub, dub techno, dub- whatever the fuck genre…There is some great tunes out there with tones of producers creating and improvising to great effect, but in my opinion there is no one better than Burial. I have loved all of his productions, with this EP one of many highlights. His style is very crossover friendly and so a lot of people can relate to it. South London Boroughs actually reminded me of  Kenlou- the Bounce (one of my favorite tunes), when I heard it for the first time.

Herb Alpert

‘Diamonds’ combines that nice 80s electro sound with funk and lots disco cheese to great effect, with Janet Jackson providing the vocals. Its a really great track, which marked Alpert’s return and got to nr one i think, i was. Very catchy at times and the Janet Jackson manages to go from from cheesey pop to funky street cred boppin’.

On the other hand Rotation is a dreamy rolling gem, pulsing like my flex when i sleep. Then Herb’s trumpet is used to maximum effect. It makes me feel so sleazy, yet so pure.
