The wobstep bubblegum dubpop nonsense always seemed too gimmicky and it annoyed me further that it seemed to represent the definition of dubstep to many people. The earlier dubstep pioneers, like El-B (often known as Ghost), Digital Mystikz (also Mala and Coki, who together made up DigiMyst), Kode9, and a bunch of other "darkside garage" artists really strike me as the best in the genre. Burial, while being pretty crossover-friendly, represents some of the few dubstep artists still refusing to fall to the gimmicky rubbish that the genre has fallen victim to. As a response, too, was the genre of UK Funky derived, almost as an outcry against the beleaguered face of London's raver underground, to represent the latest, but hopefully not the last, extension of the Hardcore Continuum, set in motion so long ago by Acid House and UK Hardcore. As of now, tunes like Cooly G - Narst set the stage for a 2-Step/Dubstep-derived genre to shake off the wobble bass and start funky fresh with sexy beats and icy tracks the likes of which only the 'nuum purists could appreciate (until the chavs catch on again, that is). In the our scene he is anything but overhyped. When you think this was produced on soundforge with no structure and drum machine, it's similar to old disco and italo where structure would completely wreck the flow of the song!
