Ron Hardy Live @ The Music Box 1984

I Know for a while we have shown a complete lack of mixes on the blog…to correct this fact we thought we would share this wonderful mix from the maestro himself. For those unfamiliar with Ron Hardy was an innovator and originator, well know for his legendary sessions in the Music Box.

“He had less regard for sound quality and would play with a manic energy, mixing everything from classic Philadelphia Disco classics, italo disco imports to new wave, mutant disco and rock tracks. Hardy also pitched records up way more than Knuckles. Techno artist Derrick May remembers hearing Stevie Wonder with the speed at +8. Ron would extend intros and breaks, teasing his dancers for ages and when the vocals finally came the floor would explode.”

R.I.P Dissident Records

CS314531-01A-BIG

“In its short lifespan, UK-based Dissident Records has developed a reputation for being elusive. Each limited-run release is shipped with little fanfare, on one-sided vinyl. Oh, and good luck finding the label on the internet—there’s no homepage, and a MySpace search will lead you only to a similarly-christened black metal operation. But the whole low-profile thing shouldn’t be taken as some kind of militant, off-the-grid posture: “We just hate the idea of joining in with the fake bullshit, ‘my new record’s the best thing ever and our label rules’ world,” says label owner Andy Blake. “It’s so crass and dishonest and not even a fun game to play anymore. We’ll talk to whoever wants to talk to us, we just don’t go chasing it.” Resident Advisor

Over the past 2 and a bit years Dissident has cranked out over 60 releases but still maintained the highest standard of quality control. Some of my personal favourites like “The Niallist – The Hots” or “Muravchix- Replicant’s Lament” probably wouldn’t have seen the light of day if it wasn’t for these guys. For me I love the concept behind the label and it converted me back from allure of the ’serato’ digital revolution, back to buying vinyl. With the awesome old school branding and design/ limited run you always thought you were part of something special, and actually getting what you paid for. Dissident has taken A&R to a new high, and their stylistic aesthetic approach to music will not be forgotten here.

Here is a mix from Andy Blake on Cool in the Pool, nice interview over there too.

Feelmybicep Presents Krysko – A Modest Medley

krysko_live_at_the_warehouse_project_manchester

“Of Ukranian descent but born & bred in Yorkshire, England. Krysko was brought up on a musical diet of funk, soul, jazz and of course house music. Mainly due to his uncles influence who was a player in the early London house/techno scene. Having been dj’ing for nearly 17 years he’s developed taste in a wide spectrum of musical styles.”

We wanted to give those not fortunate enough to experience one of his sets a chance to hear some of the magic, with this recently recorded live set. During our years in Manchester we were all fortunate to catch Krysko warming up for the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Jeff Mills and Thro Parrish to name a few- helping us collectively grow our love for all things ‘HOUSE’.  As you can hear from this mix his style cant be pigeonholed, ranging from funk, deep Detroit house to sleazy dark acidic disco. Check him out at the warehouse project if you are in Manchester.

We love this mix, thanks Krysko.

Tim Sweeney: Bahilu Records Mega Mix

256809eb47273ce2f484fedc40176bd6c5ad5543_m

Nicked this mix of pitchfork it’s so ace, full of those sick tunes every disco dj has been bustin out for the last 15 years!

“DFA’s Tim Sweeney has put together a mix of mostly early-90s disco and house from the Balihu label, an imprint started in NYC in 1993 by producer Daniel Wang (you may recall seeing his name on the tracklist to Hercules and Love Affair’s recent mix, Sidetracked). The mix is heavy on Wang’s original material (see tracklist below), but also features a number of the label’s other releases, some of which have never had digital versions until now. A compilation of the label’s highlights, entitled Daniel Wang Presents Balihu 1993-2008 is out today via Rush Hour.”

FeelmyBicep presents Luca C

lucass-3-1189440825-83 copy

Feelmybicep asked a couple of people who are doing something a little different to do a mix for us- first up is a dose of italo and jerky synth-pop with a bit of Turkish-ish cosmic thrown into the blender.

Luca runs a also runs a night called Spangles which has had the likes of Heartbreak, Horse Meat and Bloodbath pushing the plastic. He is also been involved in co writing and co producing Ali Love’s new album on Back Yard records with a release date set for later this year..very very busy guy so make time for this mix..

Sloppy slice of sleaze and cheese….

The Unabombers Beat Treat for Belfast

A-Bom

We’ve got a truely great set of treats for you little street kids. We’ve been kindly sent a cracking edit of Joubert Singers’, ‘Stand On The Word’ by the UnaBombers, with a subtle head boppin chug , some classic piano action and a cracking build up. We love all things quirky (see ‘African Rapness’ by Chris Hinz), and the infamous chanting content of this tune eliminates all need for my daily protein shake intake.  And also included is there mix of Crazy P’s ‘Love on the Line’, which reminds me of a mix between the screams of DPOMB and Black Joys ‘untitled’, (which I first heard played by Harri, and my head was nearly blown). PLUS we’re featuring an awesome 2006 mix by the boys, which literally makes me flexxx, such a good tune selection, serious old school sound.xx

Incidently, Belfast Music Club have The Unabombers playing this Friday, the chaps from Belfast seem to have been doing all the right things over the last few years, fresh ideas and good djs and now they have a serious lineup for the next few weeks, with The Unabombers this weekend and our favourite Mark E next weekend, Belfast is getting exactly what it needs. The UnaBombers will be playing in The Menagerie (saved by the mighty David Holmes) in Belfast on Fri 25th Sept. Be sure to check it out if your in the city, looks to be an awesome night..

-The Unabombers (Electrc Chair, Elektrons, Electric Elephant) plus Michael Bennett (Belfast Music Club), 9 to Late…  7 quid before 11.15 and a tenner after.  @ Menagerie..Get Involved.

DJ Harvey & Citizen Kane on East Village Radio

l_6412112505bc40e789a6aac706c0ef32

Had a nice read of the DJ Harvey- Disco Punk feature on RA today, and it made me grin a little…I think every radio mix be it on Beats in Space or EVR with Harvey makes me do the “laugh-out loud-on-the-train thing”  when listening to it on the old iPhone, mainly when he brings his joyful charisma to an interview. I like the Harvey and Kane duo, it makes for a good radio partnership, thanks to Dennis “Citizen” Kane for hooking us up with this mix a while back.

Bringing a smile to everyone’s face here is 2 hours of Harvey and Kane ripping it up!

Blackstrobe BBC Radio One Essential mix- 28/11/2004

99006962

After having this one on repeat for the past couple of days, I have to say, I forgot how brilliant it was. With some of my all time favourite tracks, this was out at the stage where I went to see Ivan Smagghe on a pretty much monthly basis so it also brings back loads of good vibes. The mix sounds like it was recorded live on the old “1’s and 2’s”(sorry), this gives it more edge and a feel of Smagghe’s impromtue live mixing- which often helps give his mixes a massive energy boost other “DJ’s” lack. Combining this with his and Arnaud Rebotini’s faultless selections makes for a wonderfull “mix”, in every sense of the word. Look at the labels as you go down, and at a time of this mix some of these were relatively unheard of, NOW they are all pretty fucking Huge. I would sum this up as elegant techno twisted in acid.
