Real to Reel – Love me like this

A forgotten soul funk classic retouched in one of last years biggest edits from Floating Points. Massive fans of both versions, they haven’t left my record bag for the last year. That funk line is untouchable, and the overlayed synth is just fantastic. we love. As 5ive would say “slam dunk that funk, right now”

Trusme – It’s a mother f**ker

This perfect combination of deep jazzy Soul and House. Deep beats & Detroitesque arrangements. ‘It’s a mother f**ker’ is the A side on the W.A.R. EP out in 07′ on Stilove4music. It’s one for all the old school New Jersey Deep fans out there. Stripped down, raw a la Kerri Chandler, this is house made for a dark and sweaty dancefloor.

The Whispers – The beat goes on

The funk line and pop-in bass in this tune is so ace….actually the whole tune is amazing. One of my favourite of the disco classics, this got to number 1 back in 1980 its sad to think amazing tunes like this will realistically never top the charts again.

Barbara Roy – Gotta See You Tonight

WOW completely forgot about this track, absolute gold. Thanks to the Disco Bloodbath for including the dub in their BIS mix to refresh my memory.

Forgotten track produced by the legendary Paul Simpson. Very much in the same style as his more well known productions “Treat Her Sweeter” and “You Don’t Know”. The sound is very Larry Levan with a FAT monster bassline that hooks you straight away, the power female vocals can put some people off but happily there is a dub version available. If you like the vocal sound of the Paradise Garage around this time, then definitely worth checking out! – as Another_Swede put it.

Walter Murphy – A Fifth of Beethoven

Massive Garage anthem which has been and will continue to rock the NYC disco scene for years.

Walter Anthony Murphy, Jr. is a pianist, composer, and arranger who had a massive hit with the instrumental, “A Fifth of Beethoven“, a disco adaptation of some passages of the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, in 1976,  managing to top the top 100 and was subsequently featured on the best-selling soundtrack to “Saturday Night Fever”.

It was also a big underground hit for Soulwax on the As heard on Series, bringing this track to a new generation.

Ian Pooley – Higgledy Piggledy

Some old school jack courtesy of Ian Pooley, cuttin and sampling done the old way. Fans of Daft Punk will be into this disco heavy, house groove. Even tho this was out in 97′ it still gets turned by the likes of DJ Sneak to get a party started.

Chic – Jack Le Freak

Some tasty electro disco here in the form of a nice rework of the guitar and funk lead classic, le freak, with a true old school vibe and mega 808 cowbell fodder. Its a remix from Phil Harding, from 87.

Cottam1 – Side A

Cottam has been spinning other peoples records from the age of 14 – after ‘borrowing’ his brothers 80s soul and early hip hop he discovered house music and was hooked. Clubbing in the north through his teens, as acid became rave became progressive DJs like Dave Clarke introduced him to harder techno and electro, a love that still lasts to this day with DJs like Surgeon and the black country crew introducing dubstep into their sets.

After so long loving the music and tinkering with his own ideas, 2009 saw his first house experiments emerge, often re-working soul and hip hop tracks. This track is of the first limited edition COTTAM 12” released in September 2009 to a rapturous reception gaining record of the week status at Phonica!

In my head the tracks are like a collaboration between Theo Parrish, Mark E and a little bit of Soundstream, really funky disco with the underground hip-hop feel- there isnt really a genre you could pigeon-hole his music in. I suggest you have a listen to the rest of Cottam’s stuff over at soundcloud.

Flying Lotus – Decade of Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus’ third studio album, 2010’s Cosmogramma, will have a tough task following 2008’s sublime L.A. In the mean time though A Decade of Flying Lotus, as mixed by Gaslamp Killer, will have to do. Whether or not it’s overly self-indulgent, a gesture of goodwill (released on Christmas day) or just blatant self-promotion, it’s worth a listen.

Cymande – Brothers On The Slide (Bonar Bradberry mix)

cymande 04

Sick edit here from PBR Streetgang’s Bonar Bradberry, a producer we loved over the last few years with the likes of ‘Carlos the Jackal‘ and ‘Dungeons‘ on Mindless Boogie. This track is a bomb with chunks of stomping funk packed in!

A word from the man himself;“Christmas is coming and im in a giving mood .. mix i did of the Cymande classic , purely for my own dj purposes and its served me very very well.. so i thought i’d share the wealth”

Boomerang – Na Zapadu Nista Novo

R-1039176-1186997147

Deep haunting bass-driven funk rock tune form Yugoslavia in 1982, hence the cliche 80s guitar solo. Pretty cool vibe almost like ‘Skatt Bros – Walk the night‘, not sure what the language is but it is a lot scarier than English.

Funkadelic – Undisco Kidd (Theo Parrish Re-Edit)

36

This track is the flip on the Ugly edits 7th release. A wicked rare live version of Funkadelic’s ‘Undisco Kidd’ sounding a lot rawer and deeply funked than the original album version. Not sure whet re-editing has occurred here but the track is pure insane fire.
