Chic – Jack Le Freak

Some tasty electro disco here in the form of a nice rework of the guitar and funk lead classic, le freak, with a true old school vibe and mega 808 cowbell fodder. Its a remix from Phil Harding, from 87.

Talking Heads – i Zimbra

Bild 102-15302

Quality tribally looper here from the Talking Heads, as ever perfectly executed, on the wonderful Fear of Music album The lyrics are an adaptation of Dadaist Hugo Ball’s poem “Gadji beri bimba.” either way this is weirdly funky!

Sandee – Notice Me

Some old school house here, been liking this sound recently, perhaps a bit grimier than this but all the same this is a classic. Sandee was in one of the original girl bands and basically started all that shite, but through no fault of her own,  the music was popular and they were a cross over success. Originally released in 1988, Kenny Dope did a version of it in 1990, which is your typical classic house fodder, some nice sounds in it too. The original is a cool jazzy wee track,  and the bass carries it through the whole way (almost). She died recently, so here’s to her memory.x

Midnight Star – Night Rider

We are huge huge huge fans of the cheese ball classic – midas touch!

Whilst this with it’s horrid lyrics and synths isn’t a worthy opponent….it’s still worth checkin. Pretty Fresh, prince.

Kevin Irving- Children of the night

DeCesare08

Nice creepy tune from Mr Irving, awesome tune for Halloween. One of his best, awesome raw piano breakdowns that are calling out for an edit. The vocals are on another level as usual, sick sick stuff.

Lian Ross – Reach Out

04.24.39

The funky jerkin bass in this track does it all here, fun time Italo (made in Germany, 22 years ago), I’m pretty sure Venga Boys or the like sampled this track, they were clearly on the ball…  All the same this is a great track with some serious synth play and its got a real pumping good-time feel, while i’m jogging to the gym, this makes me flexxed to get there rapid.

Fleetwood Mac – Bicep’s rare edits dig

This is a pretty special post, especially if your as big a Fleetwood Mac fan as we are. Over the past year or so, we’ve been hunting hard for any edits and remixes of Fleetwood/Stevie Nicks. Here is the best of ‘em!
Rather varied….with some taking a cosmic disco twist, others a more dubby jazz affair, and one which is an all out 1980’s drum machine overload!

Enjoy!

The Cars – Moving in Stereo

Total gem, I first found this tune when watching the film ‘fast times in ridgemont high’, which fans of Sean Penn will know this was the original ‘American pie’ toilet humour teen comedy of the 1980’s. Classic

Husky Rescue – Summertime Cowboy (Serge Santiago)

For me, one of Serge Santiago brightest moments, and possibly least well know!…… (again cropping up on a fair few Ewan Pearson sets 4 or 5 years ago) this is close to a perfect tune. Beautiful pastiche analogue synths and some 909 work, complimenting the vocal perfectly.

Greg Wilson edits

We have the reel master serving up a couple of slick, friendly edits/mashes. First up some classic hip hop from Dubble D and Rakim… although it has been sampled to death, you gotta love some of the old school scratch sampling…always fresh!

Depeche Mode Esq industrial sampling chugger! slapping in-an-out like the proverbial Columbian/donkey scenario, and equally as entertaining.

The Comsat Angels – I’m Falling

769b89d88b4521d4892912673232bb10a95901f1_m

The Comsat Angels were a post-punk band from Sheffield, England, active from 1978 to 1995. Their music has been described as “abstract pop songs with spare instrumentation, many of which were bleak and filled with some form of heartache.”

A great tune played by Tensnake in his recent BIS mix, “I’m Falling” was also featured in the movie Real Genius with Val Kilmer. Awesome jerky 80s pop, it even has some panpipes!

Mayday – Sinister

cY9i56e40mz6iaruUMCC4ohCo1_500

I’ve confessed my love for Derrik May many times before, but once again I dust off a classic like this 1988 12″. This is a live cut of the tune, there are a tonne of remixes floating  about which are all pretty sweet. It was on the B side of the ‘nude photo’ track i posted a while ago. So amazing thanks to Darshan Jesrani form Metro Area for reminding me how good this tune is!

Herb Alpert

‘Diamonds’ combines that nice 80s electro sound with funk and lots disco cheese to great effect, with Janet Jackson providing the vocals. Its a really great track, which marked Alpert’s return and got to nr one i think, i was. Very catchy at times and the Janet Jackson manages to go from from cheesey pop to funky street cred boppin’.

On the other hand Rotation is a dreamy rolling gem, pulsing like my flex when i sleep. Then Herb’s trumpet is used to maximum effect. It makes me feel so sleazy, yet so pure.
