Cos/Mes – Ramp

tumblr_kpwpj9zsie1qzaup4o1_500_large

COS/MES comprises of Tokyo DJ’s Flatic and 5ive, they were on beats in space a couple of weeks ago- so you are probs quite familiar with their stuff. The duo is widely regarded as one of Japan’s most exciting up and coming disco acts with their unique psychedelic take on disco. After their BIS mix I wanted some of their tracks but noticed hardly any of it was distributed in Europe. Eventually i got a copy of their debut album “Sadistic Skatepark” after a crazy ebay hunt…it was worth the digg. Here is ‘Ramp’, a really melodic track that reminds me of some 80s experimental psy rock- which makes for excellent driving music. Pick up your slice of cosmic groove HERE, yes you can get it in the UK now! boom.

DJ Harvey & Citizen Kane on East Village Radio

l_6412112505bc40e789a6aac706c0ef32

Had a nice read of the DJ Harvey- Disco Punk feature on RA today, and it made me grin a little…I think every radio mix be it on Beats in Space or EVR with Harvey makes me do the “laugh-out loud-on-the-train thing”  when listening to it on the old iPhone, mainly when he brings his joyful charisma to an interview. I like the Harvey and Kane duo, it makes for a good radio partnership, thanks to Dennis “Citizen” Kane for hooking us up with this mix a while back.

Bringing a smile to everyone’s face here is 2 hours of Harvey and Kane ripping it up!

Azari & III – Reckless (With Your Love)

l_764a1bc141c443dbbab21b4670891732

After  only stumbling into Azari & III today, this tune really caught my attention whilst listening to the the latest Beats in Space. The Roland drum machine sound gives a real old school Detroit style vibe, helped with “inner City” and “stings of life” style chords resonating in the background throughout. Stacks of Jack- then you get the vocals, they are outstanding!

The Comsat Angels – I’m Falling

The Comsat Angels were a post-punk band from Sheffield, England, active from 1978 to 1995. Their music has been described as “abstract pop songs with spare instrumentation, many of which were bleak and filled with some form of heartache.”

A great tune played by Tensnake in his recent BIS mix, “I’m Falling” was also featured in the movie Real Genius with Val Kilmer. Awesome jerky 80s pop, it even has some panpipes!

Michael McDonald- I keep Forgettin’

Quite an apt name as it took me ages to remember who sang this one after i heard the wonderfull Revenge bootleg, funk on a whole new level. Sloppy 80s sleaze all over.

Katelectro- Plug (Ottomatique rmx)

A top release on the Scots label, Mighty Robot Recordings. It’s an electro EP by a young female producer, with remixes from Ultradyne and Ottomatic. The 3 different plugs were inspired by the combination of a Scottish label, a French producer, and a remix from Detroit’s foremost electro musicians.

“The idea of the jack came from a design from the artist. As I arranged the plugs on a lightbox and shot away I tried lots of differing angles and layouts, but this reminds me of an evil robot probe closing in on the lonely jack. I feel this is a suitably dark and dystopian vibe for the release.”

Last track in Andy Wetherall’s BIS mix and it’s a cracker, buy it from clone records!

Matias Aguayo – Walter Neff

A great track off Kompact last year, featured in many a beats in space mix. As RA puts it…Born with a cowbell for a spine, “Walter Neff” has Aguayo spitting a variety of beatbox effects, with “doo doo DOO doo,” “Oww Oww Oww” and a series of whooping used for melodies. The track is the complete opposite of Dave Aju’s recent mouth experiments on Open Wide—Aguayo doesn’t bother mimicking the sounds of instruments and the results are delirious, effective.

Data- Blow

DATA Is a british synthpopband that released three original albums; “Opera Electronica” in 1981, “2-Time” in 1983 and “Elegant Machinery” in 1985. A compilation called “Accumulator” was released in 1995 by Eternity Records containing the complete albums “2-Time” and “Elegant Machinery,” and the track “Fallout” from their first album “Opera Electronica.” Data was inspired by machinist and bauhaus movements and of their contemporary cabaret music of the 20s and 30s. Lyrically they were satirical for their first two albums, turning somewhat more romantic/light entertainment/dance to their last.

Frontman Georg Kajanus (originally Hultgren, of norwegian ancestry) previously played in angloscandinavian electro-rock band Eclecticon and as keyboardist/composer in the 70s rockband Sailor. In the late 90s Georg returned to Sailor for several live performances. Other members of Data were the sisters Frankie & Phil Boulter, of who only Frankie remained in the band for the last album Elegant Machinery.

This tune was included in Metro Area’s fabric cd and also on DJ Harvey’s recent Beats in Sapce mix!

Barıs K- Kebab Shop Disco

This week I have been listening to a few old “beats in space” podcasts and found a guilty pleasure. He goes by the name of Baris K.

Baris K is a Turkish DJ with influences ranging from 70’s Turkish cosmic disco music, with prevalent psychedelic & Anatolian Rock.

I am 90% sure you have probably heard his music in a Turkish kebab shop somewhere in the East end. This record come with a word of warning, like many office emails you get NSFW, this one is kinda NSOL (not.safe.out.loud.). Anyway I have managed to hunt down a mix by him and also a link to what has to be a Turkish porn tune, but Baris K we love you!

The Jaun Maclean – Happy House

Amidst the press furore over Hercules And Love Affair (and indeed a good many others on the label) it’d be all too easy to forget about one of the DFA’s longest running disco infiltrators: The Juan Maclean. The former Six Finger Satellite guitarist has been responsible for some of the label’s defining early 12″s, so it’s with surefootedness that he tackles another side’s worth of zeitgeist capturing dance music. ‘Happy House’ begins with an entirely organic feel, with vivacious instrumentation and a cracking disco-pop vocal from Nancy Whang. Meanwhile, some classic house piano chords fire up for the main sequence of the track before an acidic bassline jacks up the closing stages.

DISKJOKKE – SOME SIGNS ARE GOOD

With two singles out on Prins Thomas’ Full Pupp label, two more on Get Physical sub-imprint Kindish, and now, a debut LP on Smalltown Supersound, the 27-year-old Norwegian producer Joachim Dyrdahl (a.k.a. diskJokke) is building an impressive CV. But there’s more to diskJokke than bulletproof connections; his spacey electro-disco is technically impressive and effortlessly appealing
”Some signs are good” mixes hand percussion, handclaps, and dubby synths with a bassline that seems to be burrowing between the drums.

This track rocks,……..think: Sven Vath producing disco in a glistening ice cavern somewhere very cold.

Midas Star – Midnight Touch (Boards Of Canada Remix)

Listening to the previous post, the Joakim RA mix, one tune came imprinted in my head….Midas Star – Midnight Touch (Boards Of Canada Remix), this tune really kicked the mix off. I have played out various other mixes by Pearson and CFCF but I’m liking this remix the more I hear it.

An amazing song in its own right and a video that outclasses the shite that is out there today. If you havn’t heard it get downloading!

Below is the remix talked of before, including some other unreleased tracks by Boards of Canada!

Delving back into the resident advisor archives, I’ve managed to pull another great mix from the greatness that is Joakim.

Out in the clubs, Joakim does both live sets and DJs, but for his RA podcast, Joakim has put together a rollercoaster turntable set which shifts between electro, mutant disco, techno and even a bit of New jack swing – all in Joakim’s inimitable style
