Kissing The Pink

Everyone seems to be going on about the Big Pink these days.  Though, if Iwas compaing band with ‘pink’ in their name, I’d say 80’s ‘Kissing the Pink’ are the best hands down. Ok, their trying to sound a little like Depeche Mode, but you can’t deny these two classics. Two perfect pieces of synthy and  nu-wavey perfection.

Greg Wilson edits

We have the reel master serving up a couple of slick, friendly edits/mashes. First up some classic hip hop from Dubble D and Rakim… although it has been sampled to death, you gotta love some of the old school scratch sampling…always fresh!

Dubble D & Rakim- soul squelch (Greg Wilson mash)

Depeche Mode Esq industrial sampling chugger! slapping in-an-out like the proverbial Columbian/donkey scenario, and equally as entertaining.

Free Blood- grumpy (Greg Wilson version)

Blackstrobe BBC Radio One Essential mix- 28/11/2004

99006962

After having this one on repeat for the past couple of days, I have to say, I forgot how brilliant it was. With some of my all time favourite tracks, this was out at the stage where I went to see Ivan Smagghe on a pretty much monthly basis so it also brings back loads of good vibes. The mix sounds like it was recorded live on the old “1’s and 2’s”(sorry), this gives it more edge and a feel of Smagghe’s impromtue live mixing- which often helps give his mixes a massive energy boost other “DJ’s” lack. Combining this with his and Arnaud Rebotini’s faultless selections makes for a wonderfull “mix”, in every sense of the word. Look at the labels as you go down, and at a time of this mix some of these were relatively unheard of, NOW they are all pretty fucking Huge. I would sum this up as elegant techno twisted in acid.

Model 500 -Vessels In Distress

witkin42

A few friends have criticised our lack of techno, so here is a absolute banger. A tune that makes me think of Tresor, written by Juan Atkins & Martin Bonds back in the 90’s. You can hear influences from Morodor’s sick italo-disco Basslines to dark depeche mode/ new order Synthpop- all whipped into a melting pot of Techno. A true Detroit classic!

Depeche Mode- John The Revelator (Dave is in the disco Tiefschwarz Remix)

Remember buying this on vinyl after hearing it on Claude Von Stroke’s fabric Cd a couple of years ago.  Shit that was a really good Fabric mix, what happened that guy??

Geeky cosmic dj; ” heard he does shite “fidget” mash style tunes that sound like Dave Taylor(switch) puked up…the Kids these days are down with that tho!”

Ricardo Villalobos @ fabric

ricardo

Not the best start when you turn up at 5 to be met by a big ass que…then when you get it in its way too rammed by the time you get to room one- you’ve already elbowed 10 pairs of sunglasses of the numerous Italians…  so checked out room 3 which was absolutely rockin…after an hour or so i braved it back to room 1- by this stage it had cleared up and so it began. All in all really good night here are a couple of highlights of his set/ or as close as i could get!

Depeche Mode- Wrong (Magda's Scallop Funk Remix)

The pick of the remixes from Depeche Mode’s- Wrong remix ep, which features remixes from Frankie, Trentemoller, Boys Noize and dim. The others in the pack are fairly bland and miss the whole point of the remix,  laden with terrible synths and lackluster production. Nowhere near reflects the work these guys are capable of. Either way we get this Magda remix and a decent Frankie one. Sticking with the dark vibe Magda nails the remix, managing to keep the vibe Depeche Mode brought to the original. Nice groovy bassline and a drum pattern that resembles Duotheque- Logo (in video), a favourite of Magdas’, keeping it simple seems to have worked with this one.

Depeche Mode- Enjoy the slience (Ewan Pearson mix)

Whats with all these remixes in the last few years? is any tune safe from the remix hammer? Obviously some remixes are brilliant, others are not- I eventully blocked out the memory from a remix of “joy division – love will tear us apart”, so I wont speak of it again.

If I had one tune that I could save from the remix I Would have said “Enjoy the Silence” … the vocals and synths are so epic that it would sound out of place on any other. Lucky enough Ewan pearson is on hand, he seems to use his midas touch and managing to somehow turn this Anthem into an acid house banger!!

Ewan Pearson…mixed in key

I think this resident advisor mix is up there in the Top 5 there are, it certainly is my favourite mix….from resident advisor;

“This mix was done on the road (the only real time I get to do things like this, folks) in Ableton Live on my laptop, during several stopovers on a long trip from Norway to Ibiza. I wanted to do something that was almost entirely mixed in key. I’d worked out most of these mixes from playing out but there were a couple where the pitch had to be tweaked in the computer so they didn’t clash.”

Enjoy.
