LCD SOUNDSYSTEM – 45:33 Remixes

paulus_4

Finally…..after……what ……seemed …….like……ages…..DFA finally released the 45:33, mysterious remix package! For me 45:33 was LCD Soundsystem’s finest work, in particular i loved part 1 and 2. “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” came to mind when I actually heard this was going to come out, so I was quite apprehensive about hearing it. The first remix on the pack from Runaway actually blew me away, taking their deep disco chugger style to a new level, its outstanding. Initially I was just going to post this tune, but cant, the whole EP is great- each track for different reasons. As Phonica put it

“Eight killer remixes from a variety of producers that pretty much cover the whole spectrum of 4/4 music. Padded Cell, Pilooski, Riley Reinhold, Prins Thomas, Trus’me Prince Language and probably the most requested and talked about remix of recent times – the epic and slow-burning Theo Parrish remix.”

don’t know why I was worried!

Shit Robot- Simple Things (Work It Out) (Serge Santiago Version)

So much hype already over this summer big DFA hit, but not much sound resonating over this remix. Im a big fan of the original and actually prefer it to the Todd Terje remix ‘Shocker’. Equally I love Serge’s interpretation as always he combines classic house sounds and modern disco, keeping a really upbeat piano groove going old school style. This tune however is broken down and takes a couple of different directions, awesome perc and spacey synths take full use of the 10 minutes!

Ladyhawke – Back of the Van (Mock and Toof Mix)

This 12″ came out on Modular last year and seems to be sold out, think it was a limited edition press. after purchasing a while back I didn’t realise it was Ladyhawke until recently, now that this tune is getting rinsed in the mainstream- either way this remix is a cool take on things. As Phonica puts it “Mock & Toof’s punk funk workout really hits the spot!”

Black Meteoric Star – Death Tunnel / Dreamcatcher

DFA did us all a favour and committed ‘Death Tunnel’ to vinyl. This track have been recorded onto analog tape hence the hiss, but that only adds to the mystique and atmosphere of the vibe, which attempts to channel the live and intuitive spirits of Ron Hardy or Adonis’ box jamming Chicago sessions with the fiercely linear constructions of Unit Moebius’ freak-gang acid house. Gavin Russom largely made his own specialised circuit setup for the recordings, and with a little help from the 707 drumbox he’s made an authentically raw tribute to the original box bangers. Big tip!

Rough and Raw!

*update*

I’ve included a full preview of the album track ‘Dreamcatcher’, as heard on BIS, its a slow burning dark cosmic affair, which should destroy a few floors alright!

Hercules & Love Affair- Blind (Serge Santiago Unreleased Chiago edit)

brigitte_nielsen

A more jacking version to the one that was eventually released on DFA, both awesome remixes I could see why it was hard to choose between them. This one was on his myspace for ages so you may still recognise it.

Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom – Black Spring

Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom are an enigmatic pair of artists currently living in Berlin. They originally hail from Miami and have embarked on many unusual projects, both visual and audio.

Their album ‘Days of Mars’ is unusual in its use of ‘live’ recorded performances of home-made synthesizers that invoke early unsubstantiated myths of Richard D James. Black Spring is a euphoric yet dark masterpiece composition with the vibe of a Carl Craig or Lindstrom hit.

invisible conga people- cable dazed

The latest addition to Italians Do It Better’s already stellar roster of cosmic disco prodigies is NYC’s Invisible Conga People. The New York duo list Can, Ethiopiques, Fela Kuti, and Les Rallizes Denudes amongst their influences on myspace, but first single “Cable Dazed” is a hazy number that recalls some of the more sinister, icier jams on the Knife’s “haunted house” masterpiece Silent Shout. Rolling and melodic it is absolutely mesmerising and arguably the the best crossover tune of last year, making both the Pitchfork top 50 and resident advisor top 20 tunes of 2008.

invisible conga people- cable dazed

I have also included a rare atmospheric remix by Efdemin, It ties in with the vibe cable dazed created…I think these 2 tunes could be the only parallel between DFA and Dial records.

todd terje livesets

Although he may be best known for his inclusion on Michael Mayer’s Immer 2 compilation, Todd Terje ain’t much of a house and techno guy. Disco is his game. The Norwegian DJ/producer is a compatriot of the Lindstrom/Prins Thomas axis of dance music, a cabal of Scandinavians continuing the Idjut Boys skewed version of disco and Balearic beach sounds. Terje’s specialty is the edit. His official and unofficial reworkings of tunes by artists as diverse as Curtis Mayfield, Paul Simon and KC & The Sunshine Band have gained him a following among adventurous listeners and DJs alike.

found a couple of decent live sets and am posting them up for your pleasure!

The Jaun Maclean – Happy House

Amidst the press furore over Hercules And Love Affair (and indeed a good many others on the label) it’d be all too easy to forget about one of the DFA’s longest running disco infiltrators: The Juan Maclean. The former Six Finger Satellite guitarist has been responsible for some of the label’s defining early 12″s, so it’s with surefootedness that he tackles another side’s worth of zeitgeist capturing dance music. ‘Happy House’ begins with an entirely organic feel, with vivacious instrumentation and a cracking disco-pop vocal from Nancy Whang. Meanwhile, some classic house piano chords fire up for the main sequence of the track before an acidic bassline jacks up the closing stages.
