The Strangers – Stimulation

Some more Cosmic funk. Another nice n nasty release on New York’s finest Salsoul Records, spreading disco throughout our lives. I like the synth breakdown/ solo type thing in it- for me this sums up a lot of 80s music but is rarely heard in ze disco- unlike 80s glam rock which required at least one 3 minute solo where the reset of the band can get get smack up in the interval.

The Whispers – The beat goes on

The funk line and pop-in bass in this tune is so ace….actually the whole tune is amazing. One of my favourite of the disco classics, this got to number 1 back in 1980 its sad to think amazing tunes like this will realistically never top the charts again.

Flying Lotus – Decade of Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus’ third studio album, 2010’s Cosmogramma, will have a tough task following 2008’s sublime L.A. In the mean time though A Decade of Flying Lotus, as mixed by Gaslamp Killer, will have to do. Whether or not it’s overly self-indulgent, a gesture of goodwill (released on Christmas day) or just blatant self-promotion, it’s worth a listen.

Cymande – Brothers On The Slide (Bonar Bradberry mix)

cymande 04

Sick edit here from PBR Streetgang’s Bonar Bradberry, a producer we loved over the last few years with the likes of ‘Carlos the Jackal‘ and ‘Dungeons‘ on Mindless Boogie. This track is a bomb with chunks of stomping funk packed in!

A word from the man himself;“Christmas is coming and im in a giving mood .. mix i did of the Cymande classic , purely for my own dj purposes and its served me very very well.. so i thought i’d share the wealth”

Boomerang – Na Zapadu Nista Novo

R-1039176-1186997147

Deep haunting bass-driven funk rock tune form Yugoslavia in 1982, hence the cliche 80s guitar solo. Pretty cool vibe almost like ‘Skatt Bros – Walk the night‘, not sure what the language is but it is a lot scarier than English.

Giorgio Moroder – Battlestar Galactica

Giorgio (Hansjoerg) Moroder (on record sleeves often only Giorgio) is a three-time Oscar-winning and three-time Grammy Award-winning Italian record producer, songwriter and performer. His work with synthesizers during the 1970s and 1980s had a significant influence on new wave, house, techno and electronic music in general. Donna Summer during the era of disco (including “I Feel Love” and Love to Love You Baby), Moroder is the founder of the former Musicland Studios in Munich, which was used as a recording studio for artists including Electric Light Orchestra, Led Zeppelin, Queen and Elton John. He also founded his own record label the Oasis Records which later became a subdivision of Casablanca Records.

Here is some tasty disco from ole’ Moroder the sensei master! It’s almost 4 different songs in one, kinda like an old hiphop battle record. It is actually the 2nd part of the extended track/mix entitled ‘Evolution’ which covers more than 10 different themes in total. The first 5 minutes are pretty standard funky disco, but when the break kicks off, the drums come into their own, cowbells follow and then those huge cinematic strings…..leading us up to a contrasting climax organ piece……. sleazy!

Mouzon’s Electric Band – Everybody Get Down

BellyDancerbackground

Some serious business here.  Dreamy bassline and serious infectious funk. This is somewhat of a bomb created by the master Alphonse Mouzo, jazz musician who wisely turned to disco for a stint and knocked out some really good stuff. He is a great producer and generally prolific in all manners of life. This track is on the right side of sleaze and the sax is simply perverted. Gets the ladys sweaty on the dancefloors. Pump.

I you like this check out James Murphy & Pat Mahoney’s Fabric Live.

Jesse Saunders- Funk U Up

jessie_saunders_2

Chicago jack at its finest, grooving sleazy vocals and stomping italo style bassline- house can’t get much better. Known for his massive hit, ‘Love Cant turn around’ that inspired a dance revolution here in the UK-  however ‘Funk You Up’ was the first ever house tune to make it onto the Billboard charts!!

“the originator of House music”. thank you.

Some awesome edits here for our friend Rayko over at Rare Wiri records. The kinda music Rab C Nesbitt would play if he was a disco jockey, funky but an extra slice of sleaze. The structure of  these are great, unlike so many edits that just extend the intro or otro and so make perfect dj tools.

Claudja Barry – Dance Dance Dance (Tangoterje re-edit)

Just back from Barcelona to be greeted with our stinking weather! Here’s a summery laid back ‘feel good’ funk re-hash from the master Terje to warm the cockles. Great percussive break, as you would expect and some cheeky trumpets to keep things rolling.
