Cottam1 – Side A

Cottam has been spinning other peoples records from the age of 14 – after ‘borrowing’ his brothers 80s soul and early hip hop he discovered house music and was hooked. Clubbing in the north through his teens, as acid became rave became progressive DJs like Dave Clarke introduced him to harder techno and electro, a love that still lasts to this day with DJs like Surgeon and the black country crew introducing dubstep into their sets.

After so long loving the music and tinkering with his own ideas, 2009 saw his first house experiments emerge, often re-working soul and hip hop tracks. This track is of the first limited edition COTTAM 12” released in September 2009 to a rapturous reception gaining record of the week status at Phonica!

In my head the tracks are like a collaboration between Theo Parrish, Mark E and a little bit of Soundstream, really funky disco with the underground hip-hop feel- there isnt really a genre you could pigeon-hole his music in. I suggest you have a listen to the rest of Cottam’s stuff over at soundcloud.

Funkadelic – Undisco Kidd (Theo Parrish Re-Edit)

36

This track is the flip on the Ugly edits 7th release. A wicked rare live version of Funkadelic’s ‘Undisco Kidd’ sounding a lot rawer and deeply funked than the original album version. Not sure whet re-editing has occurred here but the track is pure insane fire.

GQ – Lies (Theo Parrish re-edit)

Soulful, rough and ready edit from Theo Parrish’s ugly edits series from back in 2004. I think this was number 8. Hugely popular, very limited press, enjoy.

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM – 45:33 Remixes

paulus_4

Finally…..after……what ……seemed …….like……ages…..DFA finally released the 45:33, mysterious remix package! For me 45:33 was LCD Soundsystem’s finest work, in particular i loved part 1 and 2. “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” came to mind when I actually heard this was going to come out, so I was quite apprehensive about hearing it. The first remix on the pack from Runaway actually blew me away, taking their deep disco chugger style to a new level, its outstanding. Initially I was just going to post this tune, but cant, the whole EP is great- each track for different reasons. As Phonica put it

“Eight killer remixes from a variety of producers that pretty much cover the whole spectrum of 4/4 music. Padded Cell, Pilooski, Riley Reinhold, Prins Thomas, Trus’me Prince Language and probably the most requested and talked about remix of recent times – the epic and slow-burning Theo Parrish remix.”

don’t know why I was worried!

Yello- Oh Yeah!!!(bodzin and huntemann rework)

Yello are a popular Swiss electronic band consisting of Dieter Meier and Boris Blank. They are probably best known for this single “Oh Yeah”, which needs no introduction. It was one of the pioneering tunes that featured a rich mix of electronic music and manipulated vocals. The song became famous after being featured in the American movies Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Secret of My Success, and more recently Soul Plane. The song is the theme for Duffman on The Simpsons.

This is a bass heavy rework that always goes down well through a massive soundsystem.  A couple of years ago, when playing a big set, I would start a set with the same three tunes…this… then mix in Feldah and Koba- Is Klar (Pan-Pot remix) into Theo Parrish- Falling up (carl craig remix)!  Always worked well!!
