For this week’s episode of the FMB mixtape series, we’re excited to invite MIDWEEK in the mix! Comprising of members Chaz Moloney and SHEE, the DJ and producer duo have been at the forefront of Limericks underground dance scene for the past 7 years. As usual we fired some questions over to them:

We’ve had some down time over July after a couple of hectic months leading up to the summer. July in Ireland always seems to be a quiet month so we’ve used that time to get into the studio and get to work on mixing down tracks from our forthcoming debut album. It’s been nice to be able to spend a few consecutive weeks in the studio as we’ve written some more new music which we are really happy with! We just  played AVA Belfast for the first time which was a great experience & it was nice to finally put faces to so many names we’ve heard about over the last few years. Life Festival, as always, was one of the highlights of our summer so far too! That was like a proper meet up for all the  heads in the Irish scene that havent seen eachother over the last couple of years so that was super fun also.

We recorded this mix in our studio in Limerick over a few glasses of wine on a hot summaaer evening. We used an extremely rallied pioneer controller to record the mix. This controller has been with us for nearly 10 years now from when we first started playing together and it has operated some really special free warehouse parties in Limerick over the years. So it has a special place in our hearts no matter how dodgy the pitch faders on it may be.

We wanted this to be a journey mix. The aim is for the listener to get lost within the bass heavy broken beats, to be brought home by the euphoric vocals and lush pads and get lost again straight away. A constant cycle of losing & finding oneself over the course of 70 minutes. We also wanted to represent our small country as much as possible and so we’ve included a few of our friends unreleased tracks, some tracks released on Irish record labels as well as a fair few of our own tracks from our upcoming album.

Up next…

At the moment we are trying to get our album finished up. The end is in sight. We started this album back in January. We rented a house down in Valentia Island for a week and set up a makeshift studio in the wilderness of the South West of Ireland. Since then we’ve been mixing down the tracks as well as writing a few more to be released with the final project. At the moment we are also trying our best to find a home for the album so most weeks we are spending a lot of time sending around demos to some of our favourite labels. In terms of gigs, we are really excited to host an album listening party at this year’s Feile Na Greine in Limerick as well as a 3 hour DJ set the following night. We are also playing Ireland’s favourite independent music festival Fuinneamh in September and we’ve a couple of more surprises to announce in the coming weeks.

Next up on the FMB Mixtape Series, we’re happy to have Mika Oki in the mix, a French-Japanese visual and sound artist, currently living and working in Brussels. First, we caught up with her to find out about the mix & what she’s been up to recently…

I’ve been chilling in my garden with my cat! Watching the supermoooon!

As a late night bird, I’ve recorded this mix during the night in my studio in Brussels. My studio is also a radio station once a week and turns into a community studio for the french & belgian LYL radio. I’m taking care of the Belgian branch. The studio is part of an artist runspace where I live together with nineteen other artists. It’s called Brasserie Atlas.

Usually I craft my mixes like a trip on acid by balancing many opposites. From organic sounds to melted voices, electroacoustic sounds and rugged drums, busy acid workouts and sparse, bass heavy rhythm tracks. This one is more progressive and made of cathartic passages of musical mindfulness with brutal drum assaults that tugs you in many different directions at once to trigger both physically and emotionally.

Up next…

Lately I’ve been Djing and playing an AVLive project with SKY H1.

Will be touring during the summer in festivals like Dour and Pukkelpop in Belgium, Dekmantel in Holland, Nextones &  Opera in Italy & others…

I’m also looking forward to being in September for the Meakusma Festival where I will be showing my Installation Parhelion and be in Uganda for the Nyege Nyege Festival where I will show a very new work for the occasion. Can’t wait!

Mona Yim – the Chinese-German producer, composer, DJ, performer, and all-around musical polymath – is our guest on the FMB Mixtape Series this week. As always, we first caught up with her to find out what she’s been up to lately…

I recently played my first ever DJ show joining DJ Seinfeld at his sold out live show at KOKO Club in London and just released my debut EP “Gotta Do This, Gurl” on Rekids. I have been very busy in the studio and in sessions and just played a livestream at HÖR Berlin this week.

The mix was recorded at Riverside Studios in Berlin. They have a little DJ Room here where I come to practice pretty often. I always love to try telling stories with my mixes. For this mix I featured artists that have been inspiring me on my musical journey for a long time, some new tunes I love as well as some unreleased music. It’s quite energetic, bouncy and a little bit melancholic as well – it features a lot of vocal edits which is something I really love to play around with.

Up next…

I’m working on lots of new music and some really exciting remixes as well. Besides that I’m preparing for more live gigs later this year and my second EP that will come out in autumn. Lots of amazing things happening that I’m really grateful for – thank you so much for having me on this mix! This is such a dream come true! <3

Much love,
Mona x

For this week’s episode of the FMB Mixtape series, we reached out to Rosie & Nadia of Kiara Scuro, the London-based DJ duo and Balamii regulars. As always, we first caught up to find out a bit about the mix & what they’ve been up to lately…

We kicked off festival season at the end of May at Wide Awake, it felt good to be back at it after just catching the tail end of summer last year. The week before last we were at Else in Berlin with a lot of our Spun Out Agency crew and then we’ve just come back from playing Glastonbury – nursing our wounds after a very silly weekend. Thanks to Dave for booking us on such a glammy stage, and to everyone who danced with us, it was such a vibe!

The mix was recorded at Rosie’s house on 2 XDJs and a DJM mixer. It’s a club mix really. It’s full of music we’ve been digging recently, and the kind of sounds you’ll hear us playing in the club, from progressive trance and squelchy acid to weighty electro and bass. If you need a pick me up post-Glasto, this one’s for you…

Up next…

You can catch us on 9th July at The Yard in Hackney Wick for the next installment of Secretsundaze’s 20th birthday celebrations, then we’ll be at Tola at the end of the month in Peckham, before heading over to Zurich in early August.

Music-wise we’ve got a track coming up for the lovely lads at GODDEZZ alongside our pal Timothy Clerkin at the end of July, keep an eye out for it!

For this week’s episode of the FMB Mixtape Series, we welcome X CLUB, the project of Brisbane based production duo Ben Clarke and Jesse Morath. First, we caught up with them to tell us about the mix & what they’ve been up to lately…

After releasing our “Everything Comes True” EP with Skin on Skin, we made our move over to London. Since then, we’ve been playing our debut shows across the country, as well as Ireland. In between, we’ve been preparing for our next couple of records, which we’re so excited for!

This mix was actually recorded in Dublin. We were in Ireland for a few shows, and we stayed in Dublin for a day to relax and see some friends, while we were there we had the opportunity to record the mix at a studio near town.

We wanted this mix to embody constant groove and consistent energy. We have been really loving raw grooves & percussive techno, music to make you move. We’ve also added a few forthcoming tracks of ours.

Up next…

We’re playing our first show in Bristol on the 24th of June, then onto Manchester with Mall Grab at Hidden. In August and September we’ve got some really exciting shows across the Netherlands, France, Poland and Germany. Details coming soon! To top it all off, we’ve got 2 records coming out, on some of our favourite labels, as well as a compilation with Tred, Julian Muller & Dina. We can’t wait for the year ahead!
