For this week’s episode of the series, we’re happy to have SUCHI on the mix! The Oslo-born, London-bred, Delhi-influenced DJ and producer is based in Manchester, she hosts a monthly show on Boxout FM and is part of the South Asian collective Daytimers. As always, we first asked if she could tell us a bit about the mix and what she’s been up to recently…

I’ve been working on some music that is set to release later in the year. I’ve been taking it fairly easy so far, focusing on spending as much time in the studio before gigs start kicking off in spring. I moved to Manchester back in August, so I have been spending some time exploring the city too.

The mix was recorded in my apartment in Ancoats with a Pioneer DDJ-RB controller and Rekordbox. I’ve just been able to get my CDJ NXS2’s and mixer back to the UK after having to leave them in storage for almost two years in New York! I still haven’t set them up, so I had to record this mix on my tiny little (now discontinued) controller. This was the controller that got me into DJ’ing and holds a lot of sentimental value to me. So it felt nice to record a mix for a podcast I’ve been such a big fan of with the thing that opened a lot of musical doors for me.

I wanted to create a mix that showcased some really forward thinking South Asian producers that have caught my attention lately. Some are based in the UK, Pakistan and India and I find it so interesting to hear how their influences and environments affect their sounds. For example, I’m noticing that artists living in India and Pakistan are really pushing the envelope within electronic music and are churning out more experimental compositions, whereas artists in the UK are really finding that beautiful sweet-spot of sampling South Asian instruments or vocals and combining them with classic UK breaks and bass. There are also a few non South Asian artists in there who I love that have inspired a lot of the music I’ve been producing lately. The mix ranges from 111 BPM to 140 BPM and is packed with emotion and hard hitting percussion. Two things I’m very drawn to in my sound.

Up next…

I’ve got a few releases coming out in spring, one track that will feature on a very special compilation in March and a 2-track EP set to release in April. I’ve also got some really exciting shows lined up in the UK and Europe and we’re working on making my third India tour happen. Other than that, I’ll be spending time in the studio working on my third EP which will hopefully be released this autumn. So stay tuned :)

This week on the FMB mixtape series we welcome Tom VR, the producer and co-founder of Valby Rotary. As always, we first asked what he’s been up to recently & to tell us a bit about the mix…

It’s the end of January and my new year new me phase has just about faded away at this point, so kinda doing my usual thing! Juggling my music life and work life as per, but also happy as I’m finally cycling loads again after an unfortunate bike theft in September.

I worked on the mix throughout December and January in my front room, on my amazing housemate Harry’s set up. I recorded loads of takes into Ableton and went with my favourite overall mix. I also used an FX delay unit throughout.

The whole mix takes place within a range of 130 – 140 BPM and is dancefloor focused. I wanted to keep it cohesive and go heavy in parts. Plenty of unreleased tunes from me and my friends, and also lots of bassy four-to-the-floor bits that I’m playing atm alongside some older music and a tinge of techno stuff.

Up next…

I’m finishing up a solo record for the end of the year, putting out a collab with Louf on Valby Rotary (which kicks off the mix), putting out some album remixes, and also I’ll be playing a bunch of gigs with friends of mine over the next few months!

Next up on the FMB Mixtape series is a mix from Jennifer Loveless, the Melbourne-based DJ and Producer hailing from Toronto. As usual, we fired some questions over to find out a bit about the mix & what she’s been up to recently…

Dodging Omicron and doing my best to stay optimistic, we just shutdown here in Victoria (yet again), so just said bye to a few gigs… Other than that, finishing up my next EP for this summer (EU and NA summer that is) and some other bits and pieces.

In my living room, around 9pm – on my CDJ-350s, Technics and Vestax mixer.

An amalgamation of tracks I’ve picked up lately. I usually choose a song or two to build the mix around, in this case I was inspired by the recent release of remixes of Orbital’s “Are We Here”, specifically the Shanti Celeste version. The mix itself is percussive with melodic flourishes, a bit heady, and emotionally up and down like I like my mixes to be.

Up next…

Some more releases, working with screen a little, and maybe a sea change : )

For the first episode of 2022, we welcome Melbourne-based DJ Bella Claxton to our mixtape series. We’re looking forward to hearing about the mix & what she’s been up to recently…

It is currently the 29th of December 2021. Any other year I would be out with friends treating myself to the random time of year that is between Christmas and New Years, but instead, I am in my apartment in Melbourne trying to avoid covid before I play my first festival set at Let Them Eat Cake NYD. However, it has provided me with plenty of time to prepare for LTEC and record this mix.

I recorded this mix on my personal set of 2000NXS2 and DJM900NXS2 and trusty Tascam DX-40 in my apartment overlooking the Melbourne skyline.

Over the past 3 months, I started listening to a lot of heavier/rave techno coming out of Paris, Kyiv and Berlin. I am always deep diving on Boiler Room, being able to have a peek into some of the best dance floors in the world really makes you want to pack up your bags and fly over to Razzmatazz. Since I can’t get anywhere near there anytime soon, looking from afar and getting as my track ID’s as possible will have to get me over until then. The tracks I have curated in this mix are all tracks I have found recently in the niche corners of Bandcamp and in the endless scrolls of Youtube comments. I want this mix to feel like you are in a dark club with your friends abroad.

Up next…

By the time this comes out I would have just played Let Them Eat Cake on NYD. 2022 is shaping up to the best yet, early in the year I will be playing Hype Hype, an event curated by me with the team at Novel to bring the euro sounds I love so much to Melbourne dance floors. I will also be heading to Sydney to play Nights Light This alongside some huge names including Ben Klock & Stephan Bodzin.

For this week’s episode of the FMB Mixtape series, we have a mix from the Melbourne-based producer, DJ, singer, and songwriter, Marli.  As always, we first caught up with her to find out what she’s been up to lately & to tell us a bit about the mix…

Melbourne has just come out of lockdown, and the city is experiencing relative normality for the first time in 2 years, so I’ve really been making the absolute most of our new found freedoms! Lots of pub meals, picnics, dancing, and of course very happy to be back doing gigs. I just had a birthday aswell, and with the start of summer coinciding with the city opening up, there’s truly a magic energy in the air – it seems everyone is on cloud nine – as am I.

I recorded this on a sunny Wednesday afternoon, right after finishing work, with a beer in hand, and overlooking a beautiful view of Melbourne city at a friends house. So the vibes and happiness levels were high whilst recording this one, and I hope that translates. I used my dear friend Bella’s CDJ 2000’s and Pioneer DJM.

I intended for this mix to journey through all the different styles and genres that I love the most: Chicago influenced house, Detroit techno, breakbeat and UKG – whilst upholding the key stylistic features that made me fall in love with dance music. All the tracks that I’ve selected dip into different decades and genres, but all hold a gritty, overdriven, lofi tipped sound. I think this is the best showcase of my own personal musical style.

Up next…

I have a big few months ahead that I’m gearing up towards! My debut EP ‘Mood Independent’ will be coming out via a local label called Ilio Records this summer – which will be my first record. I also have two other releases coming out on some local compilations. Very keen to be back playing at my favourite Melbourne event Let Them Eat Cake on NYD, and will be playing at smalltown Street Rave event alongside some huge names including Ben Klock & Stephan Bodzin – so I’m counting down to that! I feel like I, and so many fellow creatives, have lost so many opportunities in the last couple of years due to Covid-19, so I’m really looking forward to things getting back on track this summer, diving back into doing what I love.
