For this week’s episode of our mixtape series, we’re keeping up the momentum & are happy to have fellow Northern Irish DJ and producer Kessler at the dials. As usual, we asked a bit about his selection & what’s he’s been up to lately…

For years I have wanted to live in the Netherlands, so at the tail end of last year I finally took the plunge & set up shop in Rotterdam. As with any move abroad, I’m still getting used to this amazing city and country, exploring & meeting some pretty sound people all the time. For now, I’m just working on getting my studio back together and seeing what’s good in Rotterdam, plenty of free time now cause of the Coronavirus.

Apart from that I’ve been back and forth between here and UK & Ireland, with a couple gigs in Belfast, Mixmag Lab London and introducing myself to Holland club scene.

I recorded this mix in my flat in Rotterdam, I used two pioneer cdjs, a 1210 and my beloved Xone 92, accompanied by a few Dutch beers

Quarantine Bangers. Nah jokes, I had a few ideas about the mix, as I like to mix longer sets, I tried to showcase my sound(s) in just one hour so it’s pretty varied. The word eclectic gets thrown around like mad but if I stick to the same 4/4 techno for a whole set or mix, I just get bored, so I try throw some curveballs in all the time and switch genre. Whether its jungle, electro or more obscure bass music etc.

Up next…

Got an EP called “Amazonia” coming out with my hometown label Born Sleepy next week. Very excited to be getting stuck in to throwing raves again so I’m starting a new club night over here in Rotterdam called Meraki in April and then I’m playing Red Light Radio in Amsterdam & Manchester with Animistic Beliefs for The Other, great guys! Then end of the month I’m back on Operator Radio. All about AVA 2020 in May though!

Plans for an album are also underway…

Up next on the series is a mix from Richard Fearless. The Death in Vegas and Black Acid founder recently released his first full-length under his own name – Deep Rave Memory – via Fearless’ own Drone label. As usual, we caught up to hear a bit about the mix and what he’s been up to lately…

Just finished the follow-up album to Deep Rave Memory which will be released in later this year.

The mix was recorded at the Metal Box, which is in East London on the peninsula of land between the River Lea and the Thames. I play vinyl only and used two 1210s and my Vestax PMC-46, which is the set up I’ve had since I started Djing.

I was thinking about this time when I was art college and my mates and I were driving to a rave in Chislehurst Caves. We all started coming up on these little fellas just as ‘Bug Kann and the Plastic Jam’ came on this wonky cassette, that mental Bleep sounding top line, pure bliss, mass euphoria kicked in. I wanted to do a mix centred on that song and memory.

Up next…

Producing a band, finishing an art show and prepping a Richard Fearless AV live set.

For this week’s episode of the FMB mixtape series, we’re excited to have our friend La Mano in the mix! As usual we fired some questions over to him:

Mainly hibernating since Christmas in my cosy little studio in my cellar at home working on new material.

I recorded the mix in a venue near where I live in the early hours of a rainy Wednesday morning when it was closed, using CDJ’s, 1210’s and a DJM 900 on a lovely Martin Audio system.

There’s an eclectic mix of influences in there with some recent stuff and some not so recent, (there’s a track in there on R&S that’s almost 30 years old), I think it has a good flow to it and highlights how fresh some older electronic music still sounds.

Up next…

I have my next EP out on Nightcolours in April with a remix from MAN2.0 who’s on fire at the moment and another release due out on Tusk Wax later on in the year. I’ve also been working on a side project Gelato with fellow producer/DJ Neil Diablo, we’ve just finished a remix for Al Mckenzie’s Field of Dreams project that is out shortly.

For this week’s episode of our mixtape series, we invited Cáit to to drop in to do the mix. 2019 was a busy year for her, culminating in multiple festival appearances and a coveted residency at one of Berlin’s most loved parties, Radiant Love – looking forward to hearing what 2020 has in store…

I just got home from playing at Adonis in London at the weekend. It was so much fun!!

I recorded the mix upstairs in Tengu while drinking some peppermint tea, big thanks to Conor!

Originally I wanted it to be a buzzy and rolling house party mix, but being able to listen really loudly for the recording meant I ended up going all in to the deep end!

Some really inspiring tracks from Pillow Queen and Fio Fa anchored the mix for me (both forthcoming on Radiant Love) I just love a good alarm sample <3

Up next…

This weekend I am heading over to Berlin for Savour The Moment in Renate. Then in March I have a couple of parties in Dublin one in Tengu and at the Dublin Digital Radio 3 day festival in Sound House! And a very very special life affirming party at the end of March ;)

This week on the FMB mixtape series we welcome 808 State for a special Toyko edition of the series! As usual we asked if they could tell us a bit about the mix & what they’ve been up to recently…

808 State first visited Tokyo at the end of 1989 to promote, our then new album, “90″. Tokyo’s techno scene was fairly embryonic at that point. However, Tokyo was always a “Techno City” to us, because it was the home of our synthesiser family, “Roland”. A delegation from Roland Corporation came to meet us at our first gig in Club Quattro, on top of a department store. They gave us cassette of cover versions of our music made by Roland staff in their lunch hour – such a sweet and honourable present!

On our third trip to Tokyo we were now playing “On Air”, a large club in Shibuya. We were very honoured to receive Japanese music legend, Haruomi Hosono, as a guest at our concert. He was announced as being on the balcony and the whole audience turned around and bowed. Hosono was respected as a great artist in Japanese music, not only as a founder member of The Yellow Magic Orchestra, but also for his amazingly forward thinking back catalogue. Yellow Magic Orchestra are sometimes poorly described as “Japan’s Kraftwerk”. The fact is, they had been making equally pioneering electronic music at the same time. Take Sakamoto’s “Riot in Lagos”, featured here in this mix. It’s incredible to think this was made in 1980, and remains as playable today as it always was.

808 State have been honoured to remix several YMO related projects. Light in Darkness (808 Mix), is from a 1992 remix project, working out of Fon Studios in Sheffield. LFO, The Orb and The Shamen all contributed. There were a couple of remixes on Hosono’s 1993 release, “Mental Sports Mixes”, but they’re not featured in this mix.

La Sang De Poete is one of my favourite remixes of “The Beatniks”, the 1994 side project of YMOs Yukihiro Takahashi. That package also included a mix by Aphex Twin and Bill Laswell. Our own Tokyo Tokyo is a bit of a love letter to the city that has been very welcoming to our music over 30 years.

Up next…

808 State released new album ‘Transmission Suite’ on 11th October 2019, available at www.808stateofficial.com. We played Warehouse Project in Manchester on November 30th.

Check out 808 State’s upcoming live dates.
