We first spoke to Jay over email around the time of the beginning of the Bicep blog and it was only recently when we discovered some killer rare edits from him that we were back in contact! Crazy how time flies! We’re really happy Jay was up for doing a mix for us, his digging knows no bounds from crazy Moroccan re-edits to sleazed out Brazilian disco! We caught up with him to see what he’s been up to:

“I study at Oslo National academy of the arts, and do a lot of textiles and furniture there. Lately I’ve also been involved with a project called Words of the Woods, which is a crossover between traditional music and electronic elements. It’s a lot of Moog Prodigy’s meeting banjo’s and rhythms made by clapping in water. 

This mix was recorded at an afterparty at a friends house. It has a lot of the tracks that inspired me to make electronic music in the first place. It also has perhaps the first serious track I made. At least the first track I got pleased with. I’ve been looking for an aiff file for that track for ages, but I’m afraid it only exists in mp3 now.

I didn’t have a general idea except to create that warm fuzzy feeling when the clock stretches towards 6-7 in the morning. It was recorded during the summer in Norway so the sun was up for a couple of hours before I did the dj mix.

The plan is to experiment further with music and textiles. Right now I’m recording a sound library from a traditional blacksmith’s workshop at my school. Banging around on pieces of metal’s that gives different pitch, heating up the furnaces, welding, it’s all a lot of fun to record. The next thing I’m going to do is recording the looms, to make some proper loom-techno!! “

FMB MIXTAPE 23 | HOLGER TRACKS

BLOODBATH

We’ve played for the mighty Holger boys many times, always crazy parties, in and around Belgium with an amazing eclectic crowd. I remember once getting a bigger reaction from playing “Precious little diamonds” than any of the tougher stuff we’d played at beginning of the night (Back to front set). One party in particular was our 7 hour italo disco vinyl marathon with Steffi on a boat … unannounced. They still packed it out and it was magic!

We’re over the moon to be finishing our XOYO series with them hosting Room2 with Daniele Baldelli! We caught up with them to see what they’ve been up to recently.

“We’re busy doing what we do, and that is giving people in Brussels the occasion to dance to who we feel are the best deejays out there. We let them play whatever they want for as long as they want. Simple as that, but we put our hearts into it. Folks seem to like it, and so do our guests. Over the past summer months we’ve had two Holger parties with PLO Man, Galcher Lustwerk and Bell Towers, and two weeks ago we’ve set up an intimate Sunday afternoon party in a big loft space with Hashman Deejay

Although we’ve been friends for many years, we’ve never made a mixtape together before. We bounced youtube vids back and forth for a while before we met up and recorded the mix on a rainy summer afternoon at Ewald’s pad in Brussels.

Since we are playing alongside Daniele Baldelli in room 2 at XOYO we thought it’d be nice to give our spin on the man’s Cosmic sound. As usual it turned out quite diverse in terms of genre – some funk, bits of italo and Balearic sounds, but the pace remains slow throughout. Hope you guys dig it!

We’ve got two more parties lined up before the end of the year. In October we’re welcoming two young bulls, one from Düsseldorf and the other from Amsterdam. And for December we’ve got a special in the making with some Turkish heroes. Besides the party, we’re mapping out releases for our Holger Tracks record label. HT002 in the works.”

FMB MIXTAPE 22 | MEDLAR

Up next on the mix we have long time FMB fav and Wolf Music regular Medlar. We go back a good few years, even before we remixed Terrell  which now feels like a lifetime ago… but this is his first mix for the blog. Fresh with a new EP  about to drop on Wolf and with his appearance at XOYO at their room host, this seems like the perfect time. We caught up with Ned to ask him a bit about the mix…

“I’ve been loving playing around with various setups and experimenting after a little time away from production so a lot of aimless jamming, there are a couple of exciting collaborative projects on the go too which are proving to be lots of fun. It’s nice to have some music out after a little gap, there’s a 4 track coming out on Wolf Music early October which is probably to most out-there record I’ve done, then to balance it out some more club-focussed remixes, the Dele Sosimi remix on this mix will be out on Wah Wah 45s pretty soon too I believe. 

The mix was recorded in my lounge at home, with a couple of piles of records, some decks and a little 2 channel Allen & Heath mixer. I have to shout out Johny Davies who cut me a couple of records on his lathe a couple of hours before I recorded it! Also shout out to half of FYI Chris for bringing me some pasta halfway through recording.

Apart from the first track, which is a remix I wanted to get in there, it’s rooted around late 80s dance music from various places, all pretty synthetic. There’s a few of my favourite Chicago/Detroit records, some Italo, some other stuff and some recent records that fit. A mix for you guys seemed the perfect excuse for something like this!”

“Myself and Wolf Music are hosting room 2 of your XOYO party this Saturday which we’ve been hyped for since we found out about it, we have the whole night! Then at the end of the night I head straight from Old Street to Heathrow where I’m off to Japan for a few weeks. Arigatou!”

FMB MIXTAPE 21 | LOVE GLOVE

Next up on the mix is everyones favourite party band Love Glove. We have known the guys for a very long time from partying at Corsica Studios so its great to finally get a mix out of them for the blog. After a busy summer hitting the likes of Secret Garden Party, Wilderness and Farr festival the boys will join us once again this weekend for our pre-party before XOYO at the Magic Roundabout. We caught up with the guys to ask them how the summer has been going and whats up next. 

“Larj has been working on some hardwood furniture ideas he wants to submit to Ikea whilst OK Jones & Rolfie have been holding things down on the festival circuit and trying to find time to sleep.

The mix was recorded last night in room 1 at Corsica studios in the usual B2B2B format. Shouts to Adrian and the Corsica family for letting us loose on that system whenever the need arises. It’s mostly vinyl with a couple of choice nuggets via CDJ due to Larj accidentally bringing his tool box instead of his records..”

the idea behind the mix?

“Disco disco disco. Or anything that reminds us of being in a disco. Not really planned, more of free style selection. It can go any direction with a Love Glove 3 way. There’s some heavier stuff towards the end due to red wine intake.
We’ve included some older stuff, some edits as well as some forthcoming bits from some of our pals. We don’t take ourselves
too seriously and we hope that comes across in the mix.

We’re really looking forward to joining the Bicep boys for this Saturday’s Magic Roundabout
session. The last session we joined them for at XOYO in Room 2 with Hammer was
one hell of a party!

We’ve also got a few great parties coming up over
the next two months; Glitterball in a dark basement in Hoxton on the 18th
September. We’re hosting a room with The Trouble Vision crew for their 7th
Birthday on October 2nd which is sure to be a riot as well as warming up for
one of our heroes Greg Wilson at the Nest on the 16th October.”

FMB MIXTAPE 20 | KORNEL KOVACS

Buzzin’ to have Kornél Kovács join us in the mix. He’s one of the most hyped breakthrough producers recently, also 1/3 of Studio Barnhus. We rinsed his track “Szikra” continually towards the end of last year and his recent Numbers Ep has also been a smash. We’re also really excited to have him join us at XOYO! We caught up with him to see what he’s been up to:

“Full on life mode right here in good old Stockholm city. Making the most of this Indian summer, weather and friends have both been great. Wading through records and books.

This mix has been recorded at home, on the recently announced upcoming Panasonic turntables as well as 7 different industrial grade compact disc players, all hooked up through an old Honda Civic engine. I decided on the first and last tune beforehand and just went for it.

There is no grand idea behind the mix apart from trying to impress the Bicep boys. Just the kind of dance music I like. Happy to see lots of friends in there, as well as my favourite Humanoid tune.”
