Back of the box session with Morgan Geist

Morgan Geist of Metro Area and founder of Environ Records dropped into town this weekend. We caught up with the man himself to ask a couple of questions about his dusty vinyl he doesn’t let the public see too often….Thanks again Morgan!

First track you remember got you hooked on Disco?

“Another One Bites The Dust” when I was a kid, and maybe “Disco Circus” when I got back into it through techno.

Queen – another one bites the dust

Martin Circus – Disco Circus

Is there a track you rely on to jack the party?

No. All parties are different. I must say Carl Craig’s remix of my own track “Detroit” seems quite reliable. Watching crowds react to it makes me really respect his understanding of dancefloor psychology.

Morgan Geist – Detroit (c2 Remix 1)

A track you love but has a habit of clearing a dance-floor?

Oddly, “Candy Man” by Mary Jane Girls. Usually this leaves me feeling the audience I’m playing for are completely and utterly dead inside.

Have you got a Guilty Pleasure track?

I’m not guilty about my pleasures – at least not the musical ones.

Finally can you think of a severely underrated tune, you think deserves more credit?

God. There are too many to list. Not as many as tracks that are overrated and deserve less credit, but still a lot.

Mudd – Mount pleasant Lane (Spuns Manthrax version)

I’ve had this sitting on my hard drive for ages and ages, thought i’d give her a home on here. It’s a rip of a great mindless boogie track from a while ago. Great whaling synths and an awesome guitar solo matched with a suitably constant beat and bass, will surely lower you nicely into some very twisted late night action. This is very sleazy. Enjoy.

Nick Chacona and Anthony Mansfield – Oh!

We’ve come to expect nothing but floor friendly quality from this guys. Simple & solid, no frills disco influenced tech house which binds any set together well. Nice loopy bass and echoed vocal stabs make this more of a ‘vibe’ rather than a stand-out cut, but it’s the perfect tool!

Sorcerer – Super Graphic Fuzz

“The Sorcerer conjures brimstone from guitars, casts spells with drum machines, spooks out synthesizers, and mesmerizes fragments of sampled sound.”

This track is a nice short cosmic jam with a really funk bassline, Ghost in the machine vibes!

Phelps – One for Luck (unreleased)

Brighton new kid on the block Phelps a.k.a William Phillips has kindly sent us an unreleased track for everyone to enjoy. Anyone who bought the recent Cosmic Balearic Beats vol. 2 on Eskimo records this year will known his biggest track Pitfield Girl, which is a kind of indie/nu-disco anthem, you can check it out here.

Anyho, this is a nice little indie summery track, debuting here, which has wholesome Brighton vibe to it!

Project KOMAKINO – Syndrome (Tom Furse Remix)

yX6zGzblthx9sga62P9SHYOGo1_500

You may not know the name ‘Tom Furse‘, but you are bound to be familiar with his productions. He is more commonly known as keyboard wizard from The Horrors, responsible for the awesome remix of ‘Heartbreak – Akin to dancing, released on Dissident records a couple of months back. This again is simply outstanding, the kinda shit a lovechild between Wolfgang Flür and Ian Curtis would be thinking up. Post punk industrial disco, CBS will be loving this, we are!

Pink Skull – When Falling Straight Through A Goat

tumblr_ksc6guEWpB1qznd83o1_500

Deep dark haunting and haunting tune just released on RVNG, part of Pink Skull’s new album on the label. Really great dark influence on this this is like Boards of Canada meets Redshape meets italo disco! weird tune but great none the less.This is just a bonus track on the album, if you are a fan of LCD Soundsystem or Noze you will defo dig the tracks!  We love what RVNG as done on this release to make each one individual and unique;

“For the living / breathing packaging of Endless Bummer, Pink Skull and Rvng prepared a list of 1000 different “bummers” informed by our symptomatic culture (ranging from “ADULT DIAPERS” to “ZOMBIE INVASION”) and letter pressed 900 of these across a variation of three flo-colored jackets printed with vegetable-based inks at Stumptown Printers.

The 60 hours spent slaving over the letter press at Silver Spring, MD non-profit arts center Pyramid Atlantic took on an endless if not hallucinogenic feel but never veered into bummer territory. The fruit of our blood, sweat, and beers”

Acid Washed – General Motors, Detroit, America

detroit

Ok, so we’ve got the original of the track that appeared to be so uber popular when we posted it a few months back. The King of Kong remix was an absolute monster, the original is for very late on (next day), or very early. It’s super spacey and more chilled but still got a groove with some unbelievable percussion. All those beautiful synths make me feel less angry. Its due release this month on Record Makers, who have the mighty zombie boy Kavinsky and much more talent on their list. Due to this imminent release, its on preview kids.x

San Serac & The Tranzistors – Zanadu (fetch remix)

beetle2

Some serious action here from the man behind the muscle of Vancouvers disco scene, not to mention house, good bands and mucho more. Far Away, Night Shift and Radio Zero, all shining lights! Anyhow, Fetch (Tyler Fedchuck) sent a few of his more recent edits over and Zanadu is a real energy driven, feel good and slightly camp workout. The sax is beautiful, I’m not toally in love vocals but amazing tune.

Amadou & Mariam – Sabali

Amadou & Mariam are a musical duo from Mali, composed of the couple Amadou Bagayoko (guitar and vocals) (born in Bamako 24 October 1954) and Mariam Doumbia (vocals) (born in Mali’s capital Bamako 15 April 1958). The pair, known as “the blind couple from Mali” met at Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind, and found they shared an interest in music.

This track is pretty cool, nice easy listening with some whaling synths and great borderline cosmic arps to boast, I’ve heard some other totally awesome track from them, but can’t remember the name……more to come. Enjoy.

Le Dust Sucker – Love Me

Had a listen to the old Michael Mayer fabric CD over the weekend, I’m sorry but Resident Advisor were wrong on this one, its still one of my favourites in the series! with Mayer as always mixing up his unique blend of dark disco infused techno, delivering bomb after bomb! This tune is an Industrial-synth-laden-battle-weapon of a tune…makes you stomp like a techno Viking!
