This week we invited Lucid for episode 118 of our mixtape series – she is the London-based founder of WXMB 2 and Lucy’s Disco, along with hosting a monthly show on Balamii. As usual, we asked a bit about the mix and what she’s been up to lately…

I have spent most weekends in a field of some sort since end of May. Summer is definitely busy! Last weekend I had a festival Thursday, London gig Friday, a friends wedding in Somerset on Saturday and another festival on Sunday.

Its hard to find time to find new music in the summer but thankfully I work in Sounds of the Universe where I am always hearing new records that come in. I also spent a wonderful 8 hours finding a whole lot of new tunes a couple weeks ago that I’ve been wanting to put in a mix since! It was recorded in the comfort of my own home.

Usually I build a mix around a few tracks I really want to put in it. I like to find the starting track first – one with a nice build up – and then go from there. I am feeling very confident in my sound now and don’t feel like I need to sound like anyone else or follow a trend. I wanted to portray that in this mix!

Next you can find me in Berlin playing at Wilde Renate for Marlon Hoffstadt’s party Savour the Moment on the 10th August, then I will be on a short holiday before working with my initiative WXMB 2 on our big end of summer event on the 30th August where we, with 8 other female focussed collectives, are throwing a big party at Grow in Hackney.

This week on the mix, we invited NZ’s very own Eden Burns, who recently released this 5 track EP on his new label Head Rush. As usual we asked a bit about the mix & what’s been going on lately…

I have just got back from Tokyo! It was my first time and very exciting. I got to play at Dommune and Contact. it was a really great time and a cant wait to go back!

This mix was recorded at home on my laptop, sadly nothing fancy sorry! Pretty much this mix is my favourite songs that I have been listening to/playing out the past 2 or 3 months plus some new stuff from my friends!

I am moving back to my little home town Dunedin in New Zealand to take a break/chill out and work on my brand/creative platform “Head Rush”. Plus working on a bunch of new music that will hopefully come out soon!

Up next on the series we have a mix from London-based DJ and producer Laurence Guy. We caught up with Laurence to ask a few questions about the mix and what else is on the horizon…

I’ve been having a lot of fun recently, playing at Gottwood, Glastonbury and Love International amongst some other great club shows. I’ve also finished up a lot of new music, signed a new record and started a live show, so it’s been an engaging few months.

This mix is actually a live recording from a venue in Edinburgh called “Sneaky Petes”. It’s a tiny venue with great sound and atmosphere and was definitely one of my favourite gigs this year. 

Over the years I’ve been so used to playing warm up slots that I’ve found it difficult to keep the energy/flow right now I find myself playing later or playing as the “headliner” even in small clubs. I then had a period of trying a bit too hard to play “big” tunes and it wasn’t really me. I feel like I’ve finally got my head round how I want to present myself as a DJ now and this set is a good example of that.

This week on the mix we invited Fade, DJ and one half of London based label Of Paradise. First up, we asked a bit about the mix and what she’s been up to recently…

I’ve got lots going on at the moment with ‘Of Paradise’, the label that I co-run with my partner, Paul. We’ve just released our tenth record ‘Hardcore Live Forever’ with our good friend and super talented producer Stratton, which has had an amazing response. We’re getting ready to drop ‘Of Paradise Vol. 2’ our second digital compilation, which I’m really excited for. And we’re preparing for Italo Festival, which is an annual Italo Disco party that we host in Berlin every August at Urban Spree with a label showcase in the evening. We’ll also be bringing the festival to London this July.

The mix was recorded at my home studio in London on the set up we have. I like to create a dark and heavy atmosphere with my mixes and tend to go for big, emotive techno and breaks. I did a fair big of digging around for this one as I wanted to include some older tracks from producers I really admire as well as some newer material which has blown me away recently. This is the kind of sound I really like to hear in the club and get totally lost in.

I’ve got a few shows lined up for later this summer and in the Autumn which I’m really looking forward to. I’ve also been working on my own productions and am getting ready to share some new tracks very soon.

Up next on the series we have a mix from Bleaching Agent and The Niallist; resident DJs at BODY HORROR, the Manchester-based collective making their mark with their queer nights and unique spaces. First up, we asked Bleaching Agent to tell us a bit about the mix and what’s on the horizon…

Recently I’ve been hopping around the UK and Europe occasionally playing gabber to rueful crowds, releasing a ton of records with Forward Strategy Group, and just finished putting together my next Gert P record, my pseudo-hardcore side project. That should be out later this year. And making a ton of discofied edits of old punk songs that I’ll never get round to playing out. Niall’s just rebuilding his studio at the moment and we’ve started making music as Body Horror.

The mix was recorded a month ago at Niall’s place in the early hours of Sunday morning. With a bit planning and discussion beforehand we just jammed on Ableton, for which we’re very unapologetic. The idea was to record 90 minutes centred around Hi-NRG without using any real Hi-NRG music. It’s fairly representative of what we play from 4am onwards. Tough music for tough people.

We only organise a handful of Body Horror parties a year so as to keep them as big occasions. We won’t put a show on unless we have a strong set of ideas for decor, theme, and guests, we set a very high bar for ourselves. We’re also in early talks to get a Body Horror record label up and running.
