We are absolutely over the moon to have a contribution from Automatic Tasty for our podcast series. He’s part of the excellent Lunar Disko label having also released on Wrong Island Communications. He has really gone the extra mile with this mix and as usual we threw some questions about the mix as well as what he’s been up to..

“I’m not too sure really, not too much I don’t think. Reading mostly.

I made the mix at home on my computer over a period of weeks. I can’t mix records to save my life, I figure it best therefore to leave such dark arts to more adept practitioners. I opted instead to make a tapestry consisting of many different songs and snippets of television and radio noise along with some songs and poems etc.

This mix is about ‘dreaming while you’re awake’; it extends its hand in invitation to departure. I tried to create a little landscape of feeling and meaning, through which might be brought into sharper relief the experience of life in all its endless strangeness. I hope someone out there will find it useful, or moving.”

FMB MIXTAPE 49 | LOVEFINGERS

We’ve been friends and fans of Andrew for years, his legendary Lovefingers blog and podcast was an early source of inspiration for us. His ESP Institute label is one of the best places to find weird and wonderful forwarding thinking music, so we’re super happy to bring you a special mix from him! 

As usual we had a chat with him to see what he’s been up to:

“Just back from New York City, Europe and Australia tours and have been super busy gearing up ESP Institute releases for Summer. Its been a very busy year for the label, been digging loads of new strange music from around the world, and theres been loads more raves in Los Angeles these days… time flies when you’re having fun.

This mix was recorded in the record room beneath my house in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles… in the middle of the night.

I wanted to play some tough tunes that I don’t play out much and get premiere a few ESP Institute exclusives and tracks from friends as well. I feel its important as ever to keep pushing new and forward-thinking music, rather than always looking to the past, so I started off with an old leathery fave then worked through some contemporary material—drugged-out and oddball moment, then ending on an ethereal note as I usually like to do.”

Up next…

“Doing a small Westcoast stint in a camper van with my partner Heidi Lawden (who’s done an FMB podcast a while back) and old friend Tako from Red Light Records and his partner Izabel—should be a wicked trip! Then back to Europe for all of August. Oh and Japan next week. Slowly working on my EP that should be ready by end of the year.”

FMB MIXTAPE 48 | REBOLLEDO

Kompakt affiliate Rebolledo has turned in an ace weird and wonderful mix. He also makes up one half of Pachanga Boys, as usual we asked him a few questions. His new album is out now!

“Working like crazy with the release of my new solo album “Mondo Alterado” on Hippie Dance which was last May 27th… at the same time pretty intense touring and getting ready new releases for Hippie Dance and You And Your Hippie Friends (our little sub label ).

The mix was recorded at home in Paris… I have a little set up in a corner where I can do my thing. It was done with both formats, vinyl and digital as I don´t have everything in hard copy…

I basically wanted you to feel my bicep… which is not particularly strong, but solid. 

In a similar way to how I mix in front of a crowd, I mixed old stuff with new, personal classics, some of my own and most of it from friends and people I like…”

“Summer is looking pretty intense… lots of touring coming up mostly Rebolledo but some very special Pachangas also programmed, continuing to promote my album… A couple of times in the next months I´ll have the chance to combine work and pleasure going to Mexico and visiting my family which is always a great escape…”

FMB MIXTAPE 47 | SANDBOARDS

Sandboards are two young guns from New Zealand who did a good job warming up for us when we played over on their shores last year. We are excited to share new music from these later this year, more news to follow in due course. As always we asked them a few questions.

We have pretty much just been working on tracks flat out!

We would love to have a cooler answer for this but the mix was recorded on Serato in the comfort of Toms room.

Its really just a bunch of tracks we are feeling/want to share. We made a conscious effort to include some New Zealand talent.

We are currently waiting on our debut release test pressing on Cold Tonic  records. We have a bunch of cool releases planned for this year and cant wait to share them with the world. We have a few local gigs lined up but nothing major at this stage.

FMB MIXTAPE 46 | NATHAN JONSON

This mixtape comes courtesy of Canada’s Nathan Jonson, known for his production and DJing talents over the last decade as Hrdvsion, with releases on the likes of Rinse, Wagon Repair and International Deejay Gigolo. 

Now performing under his birth name, Nathan continues to excite with his innovative and striking sound. As always we got in touch to see what he’s up to…

“Just this past week I moved to eastern Canada. I am originally from the west so it’s quite exciting. Like a whole new, but somehow still familiar, country.

I began working on the track listing while still in Germany, and mixed it all in the basement of our new home in Canada. I haven’t had carpeted floor under my feet in a long time as all of my apartments in Berlin had hard wood floors. I’d like to think you can hear the comfort coming through in the mixes, and the hard wood in the track listing.

This mix is all about travel, whether it’s by car, train, bus, or plane. Gliding from one place to the next.

There are a couple records lined up at the moment. A pair of ambient songs coming out on lo bit landscapes and another more electro duo I wrote in Utrecht last year at Stekker Studio coming out with 20/20 Vision. Both were made possible by Sonar Traffic’s extreme generosity. Rumour has it there might be a couple remixes on it as well that I’m quite thrilled about. Not too much else at the moment though musically….mostly just writing with each song containing even more melodic content than the last.”
