FMB PODCAST 55 | ANDY HART

Andy Heart

This mixtape contribution comes from none other than Voyage records boss man Andy Hart. We hit him up to find out whats been going on and future plans.

“Summer is nearly over, so I am getting ready to head back to Australia before winter shows its face here. Aside from this, we’ve just finished our first Wax’o Paradiso tour in Europe (notable shows in Berlin with Volcov, London with Bradley Zero and Gent with San Soda) and now we’re planning some parties back in Melbourne and a few others cities in Aus. Personally, I’ve been working on a follow up EP for Voyage, hopefully to come out at the end of the year and getting things ready for Youandewan’s Luna Via release, which is out next week.

With regards to the podcast I’ve just set up Traktor scratch in my apartment for testing the various digital bits that come my way. This was the first mix using that set up, a combination of records and digital stuff. I had a few records in mind for the mix, mainly the newer stuff, but ultimately the sun was out and i was just mixing records at home.

I guess the mix is a reflection of the summer that’s finally arrived in Berlin, but also a collection of new records (and some discogs bits) that i wanted to put into a mix. A few choice cuts in there would be one from Francis Inferno Orchestra’s next EP, Urulu’s Keplar Sound District project, Valentino Mora’s new IDO thing and some classics from The Persuader, Tim Harper, Delsin and more, more, more.
This weekend i’m playing with Jovonn on Friday night and warming up for Mood II Swing on Saturday at ZeeZout. Two incredibly important inspirations, so i’m very much looking forward to it, albeit frantically preparing all week. After that, there are some last shows in Europe before a quick tour of Asia and then back to Australia for the summer.”

FMB MIXTAPE 54 | TREVOR JACKSON

trevor J

Pumped to have Trevor Jackson delivering this week’s mixtape. He recorded this mix live at the New Dance Fantasy Festival in Berlin earlier this year, sounds big! As usual we caught up with him to see what he’s been up to:

“I’m currently in the middle of releasing a weekly series of nine vinyl only Playgroup e.p’s titled ‘Previously Unreleased’, old music, demo’s and unreleased tracks from the original recording sessions i worked on for my Playgroup album during 1998-2001, 30 in total. A selection of New Wave, Electro, Dub & House tracks, I re-edited many of them with Sasha Crnobrnja from Inflagranti, Ed Dmx as well as Kieran Hebden appear, and Mike Z from the seminal 80’s new wave band Crash Course in Science added some vocals.

I recently completed a remix of ‘ Old Skool’ by Metronomy, made an Old Skool Party Hip Hop version featuring the american rapper Oddisee, and designed the artwork for Clams Casinos recent ’32 levels’ album campaign.

I also host a fortnightly radio show on NTS tuesday nights from 8-10pm, love being able to play loads of diverse new music thats not necessarily directed at the dance floor, so much great new music around, its constantly inspiring to do.

This mix is a portion of a live DJ set i did at the New Dance Fantasy Festival at Griessmühle in Berlin earlier this year. I was asked specifically to play a retro set something i rarely do as i’m currently far more interested in playing modern music. They convinced me with lots of flattery and assurance the audience would be enthusiastic and open minded which they were, the crowd were fantastic, diverse, unpretentious and wild, felt like great clubs in Berlin used to be. Hearing my favourite Industrial, Electro, Freestyle, Nu Beat, Early Techno, 80’s Pop classics and obscurities (many things i rarely play out anymore) in such a great environment was amazing, Perhaps one of the best sets i played this year?, really glad i was involved, and very pleased the set was recorded.

The festival was three days of non stop music curated (in the words of the prometors: www.sameheads.com) to incorporate the best in contemporary cutting edge electronics, rare international live showcases, festival heads, label owners and the kings and queens of rare vinyl acquisition into a twilight world of entertainment.

The line up was great, lots of other artists who’s music i enjoy, Chloe, Toulouse Low Trax, Alessandro Adriani, Photonz, Mr TC, Rodion + more

I was attempting to entertain and educate in equal measures, take a few risks and mess up peoples heads as much as possible whilst keeping people dancing and myself happy”

Up next…

“After the series of playgroup EPs i’m planning more releases of my archive recordings, clearing my head and hard drive in the process ready to make some brand new music something i haven’t done for sometime.”

FMB MIXTAPE 53 | REG NAYLOR

reg naylor

Happy that Jake aka Reg Naylor has given us a slice of this radio mix to add to our podcast series this week. We caught up with him to hear what he’s been up to.

“I’ve just had a run of really good shows recently, Hideout in July was insane then played motion bristol with Glasgow’s man of the moment Denis Sulta. Then a wicked show at the nest in Dalston ended up playing for an hour and a half longer because the headliner couldn’t be arsed turning up on time. not naming any names though obviously….. Then i had a gig in Newquay this Sunday which is possibly the furthest place away in the world ever to play to 5 people. But lucky i had Jackmaster for company so the ride was at least fun.

The mix was recorded in the studio of  Balamii radio in Peckham. part of my monthly show, you should check them guys out there doing wonderful things. Then I picked my favourite 75 mins (not an easy task so hope you like the selection)  because the original was too long It was recorded on 1210’s and cdj’s and a mixer pretty standard. it’s a one take wonder to. i’m a fan of them feel like you get “more energy” as Arnold would say.”

Up Next…

“Probably freshening Andy’s fade. Not got many gigs in for a few weeks really. so if anyone wants to change that hit me up. Anyway it’s a real privilege to have been asked to be part of one  my favourite podcast series. Hope you all enjoy.”

FMB MIXTAPE 52 | 214

214

Excited to have 214 aka Chris Roman delivering this week’s mixtape. This mix was recorded live at a recent festival he played and it’s a all-hardware set! Also make sure to check out 214’s latest release ‘Fuel Cells‘ which just came out on Sheffield label Central Processing Unit.  As usual we caught up with him to see what he’s been up to…

“In June I released my follow up for Shipwreck.  It’s part of their singled sided disc series.  An EP titled “I See What You Did There”.  And in July I released an EP on CPU records titled Fuel Cells which Resident Advisor picked up for review

I’ve also just done a mix for Danny Daze’s Sunday Morning series which aired 2 weeks ago.  It’s a bit different from what I usually play.

I just got back from debuting a new hardware set at a lovely festival in Missoula, Montana called DAT.  It’s become one of my favorite festivals in the states. It’s not very big, but it’s well curated and feels like a family affair.  I decided to use that set for this podcast instead of a mix since I’ve been focusing on playing live the last year.

I tend to create new tracks for each of my live sets.  That keeps things interesting and engaging for me as well as the audience.  The majority of the tracks just stay in the boxes or are never played again.  But some get arranged into tracks for possible release.  These were all brand new again and created just for this festival so we’ll see where they go.

I’ve got a couple more EPs coming after summer.  My next Frustrated Funk EP is out September 5th and it’s titled North Cascades.  Frustrated Funk is my home label and who I work with the most. This is my 4th release for them.   Klen, label boss, and I have a great relationship and it’s a honor to work with him and the label as I was a big fan before I joined.  It’s a very organic and natural process and he’s great at giving me feedback on where to take my tracks.  Then in October I’ll be releasing an EP with Irish label Lunar Disko who I’m also excited to debut with.

I’m also currently working on my next LP which will be on Dutch label Field Records, but that’s in the early stages and won’t be out till sometime next year.

On the gig front, I’m working on taking more live sets on the road.  I love djing, but I’ve been focusing more on playing live.  Last year I debuted a new one at Berghain with your last podcast guests, London Modular.”

FMB MIXTAPE 51 | LONDON MODULAR ALLIANCE

london modular

Really happy to have synth shop owners London Modular Alliance providing this week’s mixtape. We loved their recent release ‘Wireless‘ on ARTRecords, which we also recently featured on the blog. As usual we caught up with them to see what they’ve been up to.

“Our first release as London Modular came out in June on ART and we’ve been working on new material. We’re perhaps seen as this live act that has no physical releases. But we’ve got a load of tracks which we will start to push out, A&R is just not our strong point!

This was recorded at our store, so I guess you could call it a studio mix. We used Ableton to lay down the tracks and added synced elements over the top from our modular systems. All the music is our own material.

We hoped this would be something people could listen to multiple times so we wanted it quite polished. This ruled out a full-on improvised set as these can often spiral into something experimental in a small space with no guidance from an audience.”

Up next…

“We’ve got a number of gigs lined up so there’ll be a fair bit of practice to prepare. We’re also in the process of finding a new premises for our shop. This will be a larger space that we plan to be more of a social hub, bringing in a small, independent cinema, bar, music studios and general event space.”
