Soul II Soul – Back to Life (Ultimix)

Soul II Soul is a British double award-winning Grammy act that emerged from London at the end of the 1980s . The group initially attracted attention as a sound system, playing records at house and street parties (where their clothing style – dubbed “Funki Dred” – quickly made a splash, inspiring them to start a line of clothing). Founded by Jazzie B and featuring a changing roster of other musicians – notably Nellee Hooper, Simon Law, Phillip ‘Daddae’ Harvey and Caron Wheeler – Soul II Soul’s experiments in music-making of their own resulted in the dub plate “Fairplay,” which secured them a deal with Virgin Records. They had huge hits in 1989 with the singles “Keep on Movin’” and “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me),” both from their debut album Club Classics Vol. I. These songs (both featuring Wheeler on vocals) set the tone for early 1990s mainstream dance music in the UK.

Retro Dream – Nostalgic

Some warm and fuzzy analog gameboy beats for all to enjoy. Actually quite a nice little tune here, reminding me of some of Qbical’s earlier stuff, and even a touch of Aphex in there.

Model 500 -Vessels In Distress

A few friends have criticised our lack of techno, so here is a absolute banger. A tune that makes me think of Tresor, written by Juan Atkins & Martin Bonds back in the 90’s. You can hear influences from Morodor’s sick italo-disco Basslines to dark depeche mode/ new order Synthpop- all whipped into a melting pot of Techno. A true Detroit classic!

Murray Head- One Night In Bangkok (The Bang-Kok Mix)

fa676cf860b701194084d0c7b0a0d12692714d43_m

“The original version was one of the main tracks in the 1984 concept album for the musical Chess, and its music was composed by former ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson…The song is mainly a pop song, though at the time it could also have been classed as belonging to the dance music genre”
– The verses could be described as a spoken rap by Head, a sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek denunciation of the city’s moral corruption and comparative glorification of the intellectual purity of chess.

Listened to the Remix EP this morning and it has made me remember how much i love this song.  Keep trying to rap something with  “I can feel the devil walking next to me”, and cant get the theme out of my head.

Easy Going – Fear

pic12

This is an absolute bomb from 1979, proper trippy acidy bassline, with a tempo to match(the horns, strings and screaming ain’t too shabby either). Serge Santiago did a wee edit of it, very similar to the original really, if you want it, ask :)

The BlueBoy – Remember Me (Sure Is Pure 7inch)

A classic tune from the 90s, if this one doesn’t get the crowd up to dance piss on the mixer.

“Blue Boy is a pseudonym for the Scottish DJ, Alexis ‘Lex’ Blackmore. He is best known for “Remember Me”, an international dance hit in 1997. Blackmore first worked as a DJ in Glasgow and London, touring with the British techno outfit The Shamen in 1992. ”

We Love Arthur Russell

Time for some tasty old disco beats.

Loose Joints – Is it all Over My Face (1980)

This is an absolute dance classic. Minimal disco from 1980s from none other than Arthur Russell, the man who played the cello like no other and helped produce some truely timeless music. The vocal in this bass twisted little walker is so infectious, it basically owns the whole tune lifting it above all others and a nice wee rhythm lets this roll for about 9 minutes. Larry Levan pumped this tune many times in his crazy disco mixes.]

Dinosaur L- Go Bang [Francois Kevorkian Mix](1982)

Here’s more of his classic beat clad disco twist, bongo’d out jazz with a vocal that gets me so hyped. Made dance floor dynamite by Francois Kevorkian from the original album track. So good.

Sasha – Mongoose

Normally I would automatically bypass this tune, as I am not a big fan of Sasha, which I did do when it was released back in 2007 as I even had the EP on my computer but never listened to it. After hearing this bomb tune in Todd Terje’s future classics mix I was amazed to find out that it was Sasha and I have had it on my computer nearly 2 years. I dont think this is enought to convert me to a Sasha fanboy but at least I can say I like this!

Ilija Rudman – Dance Disorder (Faze Action Remix)

From Phonica

“After a series of releases on labels Rong, Infant and Deep Freeze, Bearfunk were quick to grab “Disco Disorder” and wasted no time in asking their studio neighbours Faze Action to step up. Their synth-bass, low slung and sleazy remix, with a dose of their trademark strings hits the spot. This sits snuggly with Ilijas original which mixes in real bass and guitar with his analog heavy funk-laden grooves.”
