Digital Emotion – Go go yellow screen

Real little italo gem here, have built up a big folder of italo stuff to edit/ put in a mix over the past 6/5 months…., but I thought I’d put the odd one up here first, (i’m keeping the my favourites for this mix)….. Like most italo, there’s a fine balance of utter shite and flashes of synthetic brilliance, and ideally most of it needs a good editing to even begin to sound palatable……However, this one manages to sound the business, although I would love to cut it to bits at some stage. Could be awesome!

Streets of Rage!

Any kids born in the eighties will have remembered this Sega Mega Drive classic as a seriously tough guy beat em up. Streets of Rage, or as its known in Japan, “Bare Knuckle: Furious Iron Fist” was released in 1991. Recently I was playing this and realised that long ago I used to love the rolling street beats, without even knowing they were techno, electro disco and freak funk chuggers. The music is so driving while playing it, super urban. Produced by game music hero, Yuzo Koshiro.

Below are a few (there will be more to come and I feel an few edits may be coming out of some of this material). They sound like when speeded up oldschool deep house crashes into synth disco. ‘Boss’ sounds like 90s rave then breaks into some pretty crazy tech synth pump. Interesting.

Kano

Kano are obviously heroes for us, amazing name, and classic tracks. Full on italo synth robots.

We’ve posted a couple of the greatests but thought we share some other nice little treats. From full on camp and happy sounds of ‘Ahjia’, to the darker head moving sounds of ‘Its a war’ (Im  quite surrprised we havent posted that yet) with its well crafted selection of synth action. Santiago’s edit of ‘its a war’ is pretty good to, but the original has got more feeling to it. These two both appeared on the Its a War record in 1980.

Also included is the emotional italo journey that is ‘China Star’, which was on the ‘Another Life’ LP in 1983.

Great listening, great dancing

Omar S – Set it out

This classic detroit cut reminds us that utter simplicity can often be just as effective as the tightest production! Omar has sampled the 1980’s track of the same name – Midway’s ‘Set it Out’ over rich warm ethereal keys and a very simple drum machine pattern – It works. The E.P ”002” has just received a repress before Christmas and with Set it out being the closing, (and for me the stand out track after Flying Gorgars) I thought it deserved a spot on here. Enjoy (But you’ll have to buy the E.P)

Golden Earring – Radar Love

Totally awesome awesome record, great bass, riff, vocal and drums! Golden Earring are a Dutch rock band, founded in 1961 in The Hague as the Golden Earrings (the ’s’ was dropped in 1969). They had international chart success with the songs “Radar Love” in 1973, “Twilight Zone” in 1982, and “When The Lady Smiles” in 1984. In their home country, they had over 40 hits and made over 30 gold and platinum albums.

If anyone heard of any more floor friendly edits of this laying around, please do tell. Not that it needs editing, will always go off!

Jive rhythm trax – 112 bpm

Very weird and slightly unsettling minimal synth track from 1982 equipped with those classic cowbells and an awkward vocal. Whilst I don’t particularly rate this track, I’m sure it has it’s place and could work quite nice as a weird little tool, due to its simplicity.

M – Pop Muzik (Todd Terje Edit)

We played the original of this tune in our 80s mix a couple of weeks ago, here is an unbelievable acid-disco edit of it courtesy of the edit king himself… I never really got the term ‘acid-disco‘ when people referred that bland electro style shit, for me you need some sort of 303 sound are its not really acid-y enough..sorry we are a bit late on this one, a huge 13 track remix package released in September to celebrate the tune’s 30th anniversary.

Yes – Dancing Through the Light

Here’s a deep little synth jam by the band Yes. Despite making their name with hits like  ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’, they always tried to maintain their status as a prog rock band. Perplexing. Their pop stuff was a lot better.

NEU! – Hallogallo

R-793715-1163194517

NEU! is a German based Krautrock super group made up of Michael Rother & Klaus Dinger. Klaus Dinger played drums on the first Kraftwerk LP in 1971. The following year he joined forces with Michael Rother and they formed Neu!, releasing their self-titled debut LP on German label Brain. Their music was heavily innovative and influential, melting distorted guitars with metronomic drumming, noise effects and tapes.

As you can hear its some pretty trippy shit, perfect music to drive to epically if your nailing canisters of Mescaline and regularly swatting bats from your vision. Seen this second release of this for sale in a fleamarket in Prenzlauer Berg for €30, got it for £2 in Stoke Newington. Bargins!

Talking Heads – i Zimbra

Bild 102-15302

Quality tribally looper here from the Talking Heads, as ever perfectly executed, on the wonderful Fear of Music album The lyrics are an adaptation of Dadaist Hugo Ball’s poem “Gadji beri bimba.” either way this is weirdly funky!
