Barbara Roy – Gotta See You Tonight

WOW completely forgot about this track, absolute gold. Thanks to the Disco Bloodbath for including the dub in their BIS mix to refresh my memory.

Forgotten track produced by the legendary Paul Simpson. Very much in the same style as his more well known productions “Treat Her Sweeter” and “You Don’t Know”. The sound is very Larry Levan with a FAT monster bassline that hooks you straight away, the power female vocals can put some people off but happily there is a dub version available. If you like the vocal sound of the Paradise Garage around this time, then definitely worth checking out! – as Another_Swede put it.

NEU! – Hallogallo

R-793715-1163194517

NEU! is a German based Krautrock super group made up of Michael Rother & Klaus Dinger. Klaus Dinger played drums on the first Kraftwerk LP in 1971. The following year he joined forces with Michael Rother and they formed Neu!, releasing their self-titled debut LP on German label Brain. Their music was heavily innovative and influential, melting distorted guitars with metronomic drumming, noise effects and tapes.

As you can hear its some pretty trippy shit, perfect music to drive to epically if your nailing canisters of Mescaline and regularly swatting bats from your vision. Seen this second release of this for sale in a fleamarket in Prenzlauer Berg for €30, got it for £2 in Stoke Newington. Bargins!

Azari & III – Reckless (With Your Love)

l_764a1bc141c443dbbab21b4670891732

After  only stumbling into Azari & III today, this tune really caught my attention whilst listening to the the latest Beats in Space. The Roland drum machine sound gives a real old school Detroit style vibe, helped with “inner City” and “stings of life” style chords resonating in the background throughout. Stacks of Jack- then you get the vocals, they are outstanding!

The Comsat Angels – I’m Falling

The Comsat Angels were a post-punk band from Sheffield, England, active from 1978 to 1995. Their music has been described as “abstract pop songs with spare instrumentation, many of which were bleak and filled with some form of heartache.”

A great tune played by Tensnake in his recent BIS mix, “I’m Falling” was also featured in the movie Real Genius with Val Kilmer. Awesome jerky 80s pop, it even has some panpipes!

John Cooper Clarke- (I Married) A Monster From Outer Space

monster

Amongst all of the great bands and songwriters that came out of Salford in the early 70s and 80s, John Cooper Clarke has perhaps never received the recognition he deserves. Although to be fair, Clarke doesn’t really do pop songs. His brand of dark spoken verse set against harsh and straining instrumentals is a somewhat acquired taste. However, his lyrics are often filled with humour and have a unique ‘WTF’ factor.

Katelectro- Plug (Ottomatique rmx)

A top release on the Scots label, Mighty Robot Recordings. It’s an electro EP by a young female producer, with remixes from Ultradyne and Ottomatic. The 3 different plugs were inspired by the combination of a Scottish label, a French producer, and a remix from Detroit’s foremost electro musicians.

“The idea of the jack came from a design from the artist. As I arranged the plugs on a lightbox and shot away I tried lots of differing angles and layouts, but this reminds me of an evil robot probe closing in on the lonely jack. I feel this is a suitably dark and dystopian vibe for the release.”

Last track in Andy Wetherall’s BIS mix and it’s a cracker, buy it from clone records!

T & T – Don't Stop (T&T Version)

Finally seeing a 12″ release after many years in the T&T  record box! This is a huge dance floor orientated disco edit .

T & T are Tim Sweeney (Beats In Space) and Tim Goldsworthy (DFA/ loving hand). “Don’t Stop (T&T Version)” has been pumped by the likes of 2 Many DJ’s, James Murphy, Horse Meat Disco, Optimo, Shit Robot, and a few other friends for the past 3 years. Finally, this floor filler sees the light of day. Backed with another reworked classic on the B-side, this EP takes a peak inside some of the exclusive mixes used in a T&T DJ set.

Matias Aguayo – Walter Neff

A great track off Kompact last year, featured in many a beats in space mix. As RA puts it…Born with a cowbell for a spine, “Walter Neff” has Aguayo spitting a variety of beatbox effects, with “doo doo DOO doo,” “Oww Oww Oww” and a series of whooping used for melodies. The track is the complete opposite of Dave Aju’s recent mouth experiments on Open Wide—Aguayo doesn’t bother mimicking the sounds of instruments and the results are delirious, effective.

Prosumer

Achim Brandenburg is a bit of a Chicago house and Detroit techno buff, an area of expertise he first picked up as a record buyer for Hard Wax in his hometown of Saarbruecken. That was during the heyday of soulful house labels such as Prescription, and it’s a sound which still can be heard in Prosumer’s sets today. “My heart is beating for the early Chicago/Detroit sound and for music that feels similar and transports this feeling into today,” explains Achim. Slowly the consumer turned into Prosumer, issuing his first record on 240 Volt in 2004.

A year later came ‘The Craze’ on Playhouse, then vocal duties on Sebo K’s ‘Moved’, both of which became bona fide hits, melding house stabs with soulful vocals. Achim’s latest record is a collaboration with producer Murat Tepeli, with whom he also performs live, for Ostgun Ton, the record arm of Berlin’s Berghain/Panoramabar complex, where Achim is now a resident DJ.

“Whatever I do has got to be real,” says Achim about his DJing. “If a record doesn’t move me emotionally or physically, I won’t play it out. I have to feel the music and I’m always trying to share my feelings with the crowd on the floor. If everything goes down well, there’s an exchange going on. I try to keep a balance between pushing people’s buttons and surprising them. I’m sharing my inner emotions. And dance music has got to be horny.”

Data- Blow

DATA Is a british synthpopband that released three original albums; “Opera Electronica” in 1981, “2-Time” in 1983 and “Elegant Machinery” in 1985. A compilation called “Accumulator” was released in 1995 by Eternity Records containing the complete albums “2-Time” and “Elegant Machinery,” and the track “Fallout” from their first album “Opera Electronica.” Data was inspired by machinist and bauhaus movements and of their contemporary cabaret music of the 20s and 30s. Lyrically they were satirical for their first two albums, turning somewhat more romantic/light entertainment/dance to their last.

Frontman Georg Kajanus (originally Hultgren, of norwegian ancestry) previously played in angloscandinavian electro-rock band Eclecticon and as keyboardist/composer in the 70s rockband Sailor. In the late 90s Georg returned to Sailor for several live performances. Other members of Data were the sisters Frankie & Phil Boulter, of who only Frankie remained in the band for the last album Elegant Machinery.

This tune was included in Metro Area’s fabric cd and also on DJ Harvey’s recent Beats in Sapce mix!
